Job Summary
The Academic Advisor/Program Assistant will collaborate with other University personnel of the University College, faculty, and other university departments to instill the freshman core values of excellence and accountability in the classroom. This position will work to sustain student excellence with development of academic success and goals, self-awareness, career options, cultural enrichment, and professionalism. Academic advising will initiate the process between the student and an academic advisor of exploring the value of a general education, reviewing the services and policies of the university, discussing educational and career plans, and making appropriate course selections.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
The Academic Advisor/Program Assistant will assume the following roles:
- Instruct University First Year Experience 101 and 102 courses
- Prepare lesson plan for in class/online instruction
- Conduct advisement of academic requirements to Freshman students
- Work in conjunction with University College’s team for success of programs
- Consult with academic department’s faculty and Deans to provide academic support to students
- Provide academic advisement to students with one-on-one mentoring, workshops, and presentations
- Participate and assist with ROAR (Ready for Orientation, Advisement, Registration)
- Work in conjunction with the Office of Retention to retain first-year students
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Master’s degree in academic discipline or related field from an accredited institution
- Three to five years of professional experience in higher education
- Extended experience working in an education retention program, implementing student development programs, leadership development and advising
- Involvement with community service and leaders within and outside the community and University
- Teaching or counseling experience preferred
