Job Title: Tooling Engineer

Reports To: Engineering Manager

FLSA Status & EEO Code: Exempt/Professionals

Division/Department: GHM/Operations

Level of Work: Level II

Position Summary: The tooling engineer connects the manufacturing floor and engineering. The tooling engineering supports both groups to create a more efficient and repeatable manufacturing process insuring a consistent product. The tooling engineer is responsible for identifying gaps in the manufacturing process and designing tools, fixtures, and processes to close those gaps. The tooling engineering will be a champion in driving a culture of continuous improvement. The tooling engineering will work closely with project engineers, program managers, manufacturing engineer, quality, and manufacturing.

Level II: Service – Coordinating “production” with problem solving and prevention

  • Plays an active role in product design/development including review of technical details and design for manufacture
  • Review standard production requirements by customer and industry to develop critical documents for production.
  • Ensure that all lessons learned are incorporated into work instructions and drawings to ensure that the quality of the product and driving a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Research and identify equipment or tools needed to improve capacity and performance to ensure productivity improvements for the department.
  • Monitor equipment installations and repairs to ensure they meet requirements and stay on schedule.
  • Research and identify equipment software improvements to improve capacity and performance to ensure productivity improvements for the department.
  • Complete the purchase requisition for needed equipment and submit to Purchasing to ensure the project schedule can be met with suppliers lead times.
  • Review requirements, work instructions and drawings with manufacturing to ensure customer requirements can be met.
  • Verify and validate that all machines are working properly and preventive maintenance is performed per the schedule.
  • Review preventive maintenance data to ensure the effectiveness of the maintenance program and limit downtime of said equipment
  • Collaborate with all departments to ensure that information and data transfers effectively to meet customer needs and organizational objectives.
  • Identify daily safety, quality, delivery cost issues and report to management in the daily work status meeting.
  • Collaborate with engineering to ensure work instructions and drawings for production are released and accurate in order to properly meet customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to ensure that parts and equipment needed to meet customer requirements are identified, ordered from an approved supplier and received per the schedule needs.
  • Collaborate with Quality to validate requirements and disposition nonconforming parts.
  • Collaborate with Planning to modify the schedule when maintenance and repair needs require equipment to be down.
  • Ensure safety of the employees and quality of the products throughout all processes.
  • Able to locate Quality Management System procedures, have read and understand relevant procedures and are aware of all procedural changes when they occur.
  • Follow all production procedures to drive quality outcomes.
  • Assist with root cause analysis to ensure that safety and quality problems properly evaluated and corrected.
  • Compliant with all safety procedures to ensure proper protective equipment usage to ensure personnel safety.
  • Continuously improve procedures, processes and methods to effectively meet customer needs and organizational objectives.
  • Identify and implement improvements in process and product relating to safety, quality, delivery and cost and elevates them to the Manufacturing Manager.

Assist on continuous improvement teams to help drive department improvements.

  • Uses 3D modeling software to develop tools and fixtures for manufacturing
  • Creates BOMs for fixtures and tools
  • Works to develop new and more repeatable measuring techniques for consistent manufacturing.
  • Participate as reviewer in the design review process representing design for manufacturing
  • Identify, review, and develop product improvements.
  • Works in a team environment with operations, estimators, designers, drafters, and/or sales representatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience and abilities required.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous work in a manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of fabrication, machining, welding, inspection, and measurement techniques
  • Working knowledge of Inventor 3-D modelling software
  • Working knowledge of GD&T

  • Have basic knowledge of GD&T principal and working knowledge of a variety of machining processes
