Farmworkers

Crops: Watermelons, Cantaloupe and melons. Sanitation Requirements: For food and general personal safety purposes, all workers will be required and expected to follow common sanitary practices at all times. This is particularly critical when hand harvesting crops for human consumption. Employees are required to cleanse their hands by washing them thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom and before entering the fields for harvest activities or the packing facility for packing operations. Workers will perform various duties to plant, harvest, and stage crops grown on the employers farm. Workers will remove the vegetable (listed above) from the plant according to size and maturity that will be able to be packed and shipped. Then the produce will be placed in a six-gallon picking bucket. After bucket is full the workers will and carry the bucket to a flatbed truck or flatbed field trailer. A person on truck or trailer will receive the full buckets. This person will either dump the produce in plastic bin or set the full bucket on the truck or trailer. The person on the truck on the trailer will give a token to the picker each time they take a full bucket. This process will be repeated throughout the day until the scheduled field is picked. Workers will also assist with irrigation and perform weeding duties (remove weeds by hand or with a hoe), along with pulling plastic from fields after harvest has finished. Watermelons: At harvest, workers will be expected to select the melons based on the standard disclosed to the worker by the supervisor. Workers will walk along rows and cut melons according to size, color, shape and degree of maturity using a knife. Workers will load harvested melons onto the bus. Also, the workers will be expected to grade, sort, and place in shipping containers. Sweet Potatoes: Workers will work in all duties involved in planting, growing and harvest sweep potatoes. Workers will plant, cultivate, and harvest sweet potatoes. Workers will cut planting slips, and place in container according to instructions. Workers will use care when working with potato knife. Workers will walk along row that have been previously plowed. Workers will drip potato slips into ground and cover back up with dirt. Workers will remove weeds manual either by hand or with a hoe. Workers will stoop, bend, and kneel to pick up sweet potatoes using hands and fingers to dig out exposed potatoes. Workers may grade in the field separating #1s and #2s into separate 5/8 field hampers. Canners, when harvested will be placed into a separate bin. Damaged and diseased potatoes will not be harvested. Full hampers weighting up to 35 lbs. will be carried to ruck row to be loaded into truck or trailer. Workers will be required to stay on their assigned row. Workers may also be required to wash the sweet potatoes and get the ready for sale. Workers will perform various duties associated with grading, sorting, and packing onions, watermelons, squash, zucchini, potatoes, corn broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, greens, citrus, and avocado. All packing will take place on the farm. Grading Working carefully remove any field debris and defective produce as defined by grading supervisor as produce moves across grading tables.
