Position Summary
The Peer Support Specialist provides trauma-informed, recovery-oriented support to youth, adults, and families served by Grace and Mercy Establishment. This role uses lived experience to offer guidance, encouragement, and skill-building to individuals navigating mental health challenges, behavioral needs, and community-based services. Peer Support Specialists help clients build confidence, independence, and emotional stability while fostering positive daily routines.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one and group peer support using your own lived experience as a foundation for connection and guidance.
- Assist individuals in developing coping skills, emotional regulation techniques, and problem-solving strategies.
- Support youth and adults during daily program activities, community engagement, and therapeutic routines.
- Promote personal empowerment and model healthy behaviors, boundaries, and communication.
- Document all interactions and services according to agency, Medicaid, and regulatory standards.
- Participate in team meetings and collaborate with therapists, case managers, and youth counselors.
- Help individuals navigate resources, appointments, and community systems as needed.
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and positive environment for all participants.
Qualifications
- Lived experience in behavioral health, recovery, trauma, or a related area required.
- North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) preferred but not required (training available).
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Strong communication skills and ability to connect with diverse individuals.
- Reliable transportation and consistent attendance.
Preferred Experience/Skills
- Experience working with youth, families, group homes, or mental health programs.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, crisis de-escalation, or community mental health services.
- Ability to complete timely documentation and maintain confidentiality.
- Patience, empathy, and strong emotional self-regulation.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- May involve supporting clients indoors, outdoors, in the community, and within agency programs.
- Occasional lifting under 25 lbs may be required.
- Ability to remain calm in high-stress or emotional situations.
