Fiber Drop Bury Technician — Paid Training Provided

Pay: $42,000–$65,000 per year
Schedule: Monday–Friday, daytime hours
About Us
GR Underground Services is a West Virginia underground utility contractor specializing in fiber optic drop bury installations. We're a small, hard-working crew, and we're growing. We're looking for someone reliable who wants to learn the trade and work their way up.
The Role
You'll start in a paid training period, working alongside an experienced technician burying fiber optic cable from the pedestal or pole to customer homes. This is outdoor, physical, hands-on work — primarily hand digging. We'll train you from the ground up and provide all tools, equipment, and the truck you'll ride in. If you show up on time, work hard, and pick things up, you'll move into running your own drop bury truck — where the earning potential in this range really takes hold.
What You'll Do
- Assist with fiber drop bury installations at residential properties
- Hand dig trenches around marked utilities and obstacles (this is the core of the job)
- Read and follow 811 locate markings
- Load, unload, and maintain tools and materials
- Interact professionally with homeowners
- Keep job sites clean and safe
- Help document jobs with photos and notes on your smartphone

- Fiber optic cable handling and installation techniques
- Reading utility locate marks and understanding 811 tickets
- Customer service and jobsite standards

Requirements
- Valid driver's license (required — no exceptions)
- Clean driving record — must be insurable under our commercial auto policy. This is what determines whether you can move up to running your own truck, so it matters from day one.
- Your own smartphone (for job tracking, photos, and communication — we do not provide one)
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Reliable transportation to our Eleanor shop each workday
- Able to work outdoors in heat, cold, and rain
- Able to lift 50 lbs repeatedly, hand dig for extended periods, and be on your feet all day
- Strong work ethic and willingness to learn
- Show up on time, every day
Preferred (Not Required)
- Any experience with hand tools, construction, landscaping, or utility work
- Comfortable using a smartphone for job tracking and photos
Career Path
Our goal with this position is to train you into a drop bury technician running your own company truck. You'll start in a paid training period riding with an experienced tech, then move up to running your own drops as you prove you can do the work safely and reliably. This is a real career path — not a dead-end job, and what you earn grows as you move up.
