The Cocoa Police Department (CPD) is a CFA-accredited, community-focused agency serving 20,000 residents in Brevard County, Florida. Located in the heart of the Space Coast, Cocoa is:

Competitive Pay

$26.52 hourly
Annual range: $55,161.60 – $86,278.40
(Top-out projected to reach $92,331.20 within two fiscal years.)

Bonuses & Incentives

  • $5,000 State of Florida bonus for newly certified officers or officers relocating to Florida

  • Sign-on bonus up to $10,000

    • $2,000 per verified year of prior full-time sworn experience (up to 5 years)

  • Experience Pay: 3% for each documented year of service (max 15%)

  • Education Incentives:

    • $360/yr – Associate’s

    • $600/yr – Bachelor’s

    • Up to $1,440/yr – State incentive

  • Pension Buy-Back for previous sworn service

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant, Cocoa Police Officers perform general law-enforcement and public-safety duties to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote positive community relationships. Officers patrol assigned areas, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, conduct investigations, enforce federal/state/municipal laws, and complete detailed reports. Work is performed in a high-stakes environment requiring strong judgment, professionalism, and integrity.


Essential Job Functions

Patrol & Public Safety

  • Patrol assigned areas by cruiser, foot, bicycle, boat, or other means

  • Maintain constant radio communication with dispatch

  • Identify and address suspicious activity, hazards, and quality-of-life concerns

  • Check buildings and properties for suspicious openings or security issues

Crime Response & Investigation

  • Respond to calls involving criminal violations

  • Secure scenes, restore order, preserve evidence

  • Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects

  • Arrest offenders, seize contraband, conduct searches

  • Complete booking forms and testify in court

Traffic Enforcement & Accident Response

  • Enforce traffic laws; issue citations and warnings

  • Investigate crashes and direct traffic at major incidents

  • Assist victims and provide first aid

  • Escort funerals, dignitaries, and special event traffic

Problem-Solving Policing & Community Engagement

  • Build relationships with residents and businesses

  • Attend community meetings and events

  • Participate in problem-oriented policing strategies

Administrative & Training Requirements

  • Prepare detailed written reports

  • Conduct follow-up investigations and surveillance as assigned

  • Attend mandatory in-service training

  • Maintain physical fitness and professional standards

Essential employees may be required to work during declared or undeclared emergencies.


Minimum Qualifications

Certification

  • Florida Certified Law Enforcement Officer OR

  • Eligible for FDLE Equivalency of Training (EOT) (FDLE Form 76)

Education

  • High school diploma or GED (college degree preferred)

Licensing

  • Valid Florida driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 45 days)

Criminal History Requirements

  • No felony convictions

  • No misdemeanors involving perjury, false statements, or moral turpitude

  • No dishonorable military discharge

Screening Requirements

Must pass:

  • Comprehensive background investigation

  • Polygraph or CVSA

  • Medical exam

  • Psychological evaluation

  • Drug screen

Physical Ability

Capable of medium/heavy work including:

  • Lifting/pushing up to 100 lbs

  • Running, climbing, kneeling, crawling

  • Standing/walking for extended periods

  • Functioning in stressful, hazardous, and fast-paced environments


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of Florida criminal law, department rules, and police procedures

  • Proficiency with computers, in-car technology, and Microsoft Office

  • Excellent report-writing and documentation skills

  • Ability to analyze problems, make sound decisions, and act calmly under pressure

  • High integrity, professionalism, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions with minimal supervision


Work Environment

Duties are performed on-site in diverse environments, often involving physical hazards, high-stress decision-making, and variable weather conditions. Officers must be prepared to respond to emergencies at any time.
