COUNTY OF HAMILTON, INDIANA
POSITION: Part-Time / Seasonal - Engineering
DEPARTMENT: Highway
WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., M-F
JOB CATEGORY: Part-Time
STATUS: Part-time/Seasonal
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
HOURLY RATE: $19 per hour

Incumbent serves as a Part-Time Seasonal-Engineering for the Highway Department, responsible for assisting the Engineering Section with gathering data regarding pavement conditions, traffic and sign data and assisting with inspection of contractual work.
DUTIES:
Assists with inspection of contract resurfacing projects, including tracking of quantities and types of materials used, and ensuring the contractor complies with the specifications outlined in the resurfacing contract.
Assists with problem resolution while serving as an inspector. May interact with the public as needed. Reports to the Project Engineer for overall direction and guidance.
Conducts traffic counts on county roadways.
Conducts roadway condition evaluations according to the PASER system. Inputs data into computer program.
Inspects signage for overall condition and retro reflectivity.
Assists with upgrading of sign and small structure inventory.
Periodically may assist with traffic studies, traffic investigations and inspection of traffic related projects.
Performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to make basic mathematical calculations.
Organized with the ability to handle large amounts of data, including inputting data into a computer program.
Ability to read and interpret detailed specifications, technical reference materials and contract documents.
Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department and OSHA safety policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of local geography and ability to read and interpret local maps.
Ability to work alone and with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions/directions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.
Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to effectively communicate orally with co-workers and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
Must be self-reliant and organized in order to meet assigned deadlines.
Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license, and demonstrated safe driving record. Must be able to provide own transportation to job sites.
II. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs routine, standardized daily assignments as assigned. Responsibilities also include staying aware of surroundings while working along the roadways and performing duties in a safe manner.
III. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent communicates with contractors’ employees, various vendor employees, co-workers and the public for the purpose of exchanging information.
Incumbent reports directly to the appropriate Project Engineer.
IV. PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Incumbent's duties may involve continuous physical exertion, driving for long periods, far vision, hearing, handling/grasping/fingering objects, standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, reaching, bending, depth and color perception, and crouching/kneeling.
V. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties in a vehicle or outdoors, and is frequently exposed to normal hazards associated with maintaining roads and rights-of-way, such as power tools, machinery, traffic, noise, grease, dirt, dust, vehicle fumes, extreme temperatures, and inclement weather. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others.
Incumbent may occasionally work extended evening and/or weekend hours.
