The Director of Health Services at Gould Academy leads and manages a team of health staff, including Nurses, a School Counselor, an Athletic Trainer, and a Student Health Services Coordinator. The Director oversees the smooth operation of Health Services, ensures that the delivery of care meets high standards, supports summer camp coverage, and acts as a liaison to the wider school community.  Additionally, the Director serves as a Professional School Nurse, providing direct care as well as being part of the evening and weekend on-call rotations.

Pay Range Full-Time 12-month: $75,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience and campus housing.

Does this position supervise other employees:   Yes, the Student Health Services Coordinator, Professional Nurses, School Counselor, and Athletic Trainer.  

Relationships 

  • All Gould Employees and Affiliates. 
  • Serves as the contact person for independent and contracted providers.
  • Works closely with faculty and staff members who work directly with students.
  • Works closely with parents to support student health needs. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Director of Health Services 

Policy Development/ Practices and Coordination

  • Develop, maintain, and revise school health policies in conjunction with the Assistant Head of School.
  • Establish and continually evaluate procedures and standing orders for the Health Services department.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Student Health Services at Gould Academy.
  • Manage the Health Services budget.

 Medication Administration and Record Keeping

  • Safely implement the school medication policy and procedure, including oversight for medication administration by Nurses as well as Unlicensed Assistive Personnel.
  • Maintain a relationship with a partner pharmacy to provide safe medication packaging and administration for students.  Track refill needs and coordinate prescription medication being packed out for on- and off-campus use.  
  • Prepare necessary health records, first aid kits, and medications for off-campus trips and activities.
  • Track student immunization status and TB screening for compliance with State of Maine and Gould Academy requirements.  Serve as the point person for the ImPACT compliance portal. 
  • Responsible for coordinating the delivery and receipt of required student health forms from guardians and medical providers.  This includes ensuring compliance for up-to-date physicals, medication order forms, medical action plans, and other  school forms.
  • Oversees and troubleshoots the EMR for all health staff use.

Crisis Management

  • Take a leadership role in crisis situations involving a student's health and well-being.  This includes mental health, accidents and injuries, acute illnesses, substance use/abuse, etc. 
  • Serve as a member of Gould’s Crisis Management Team and Safety Committee.

Staff Management

  • Ensure scheduling of regular staff meetings with appropriate individual staff follow-up as needed.
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to the Health Services team, ensuring that a high standard of care is maintained by all staff while also being aligned with Gould’s mission and values.  
  • Create and implement a monthly nursing coverage schedule.
  • Participate or delegate attendance in Student Support and Community and Residential Life meetings.

Programming

  • Plan and coordinate annual flu clinic for students and the wider Gould community each Fall.
  • Take a leadership role in planning and coordinating health care, emergency response, and medication for student travel.  This includes international and domestic travel, camping expeditions, and co-curricular/athletic/weekend trips.   
  • Prepare for the opening of school to ensure that all documentation is up-to-date and medication management is ready for student arrival.
  • Train non-medical staff on medication administration.
  • Oversee campus safety as it relates to health, including the dissemination and maintenance of AEDs, Epi-pens, and first-aid kits.

Direct Care

  • Serve as a clinical nurse within the nursing rotation, providing direct care to students who are injured or ill, to include evening and weekend coverage.
  • Pack medication for distribution, ensuring that there is an adequate supply of all prescription and OTC medication.  
  • Coordinate off-campus appointments with specialists as needed.
  • Provide case management for acute care and chronic illness. 

Consultation and External Relations

  • Serve as a liaison and consultant to outside departments within Gould (Admissions, Academic Skills Program, Academics, Athletics, Community Life, Dorm Heads, etc) for health and safety-related protocols and concerns.
  • Act as the point person/liaison to outside health care resources (Bethel Family Health Center, outside providers, therapists, and psychiatrists).
  • Manage contracts and/or relationships with these outside resources/providers.
  • Support the Admission Office by reviewing prospective student files and conducting conversations with outside health professionals as needed during the admission process.
  • Manage student medical leaves and communicate needed information to key stakeholders.

Summer Camps Medical Management

  • Support summer camp medical form review, medication intake and administration processes.
  • Provide summer camp nursing support.

Staff  Development and Recruitment

  • Mentor and train Health Services staff to help them reach their highest potential and enhance a culture of accountability and professionalism.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback and support for staff professional growth.
  • Provide support to faculty, when necessary, to address areas of improvement and promote professional development.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to hire and recruit personnel, ensuring that health service staffing needs are met.
Qualifications:

Education 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Public Health, or similar health care certifications

Experience

  • Three years’ experience in healthcare administration or leadership, preferred.
  • Experience working directly with adolescents is preferred.

  • Current certification in CPR & BLS
