JOB TITLE: HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC
REPORTS TO: FLEET MANAGEMENT SUPERVISOR
DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for keeping equipment used in road construction and maintenance in good repair and for performing preventive maintenance on all county vehicles.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Runs diagnostics on heavy equipment and vehicles used in road construction.
Runs diagnostics on all county vehicles, including patrol cars, light duty trucks, etc.
Repairs any diagnosed problems or makes recommendation when repairs are needed from an outside vendor.
Performs preventive maintenance on all heavy equipment, including but not limited to paving equipment, dump trucks, construction equipment, etc.
Performs preventive maintenance of all county vehicles.
Logs maintenance data in the computer and schedules vehicles for regular maintenance.
Keeps shop area and tools neat.
Follows safety rules outlined in the Gordon County Safety Ordinance, and any other departmental safety rules to ensure the safety of self and all fellow workers.
Responsible for reporting need for additional inventory in accordance with departmental rules and the Gordon County Purchasing Ordinance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work effectively as a team member in providing excellence in customer service to the citizens of Gordon County.
Ability to read, understand, and put into action, instruction manuals, procedure methods and regulations.
Ability to diagnose and repair equipment and vehicles.
Ability to do math computations on a high school level.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
None associated with this position.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or Equivalency.
Additional training and certifications in equipment and vehicle repair.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Georgia Driver’s License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties of this position all performed largely in a shop setting. Fields work may require travel to construction site to diagnose or make needed repairs on heavy equipment.
The work for this position requires that the employee be exposed to a variety of settings and conditions. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather as travels to work sites and may have to perform duties in inclement weather, extreme cold or heat. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and risk of electrical shock. Noise levels may vary at times, but are frequently high to moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hand with dexterity; reach with hands and arms, bend and twist. Must be able to use appropriate tools and equipment needed to make equipment and vehicle repairs and maintenance. The employee is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
