What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Counselor position at Gordon Central High School?
The job of School Counselor is done for the purpose/s of managing the placement of assigned students; providing guidance, information and recommendations to students; developing plans and/or providing information regarding students' goals; and ensuring the accurate completion of student records.
- Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities using a variety of methods for the purpose of assisting students in understanding possible career interests and preparing for future success.
- Coordinates with teachers, outside personnel, resource specialists and/or community (e.g. service clubs, courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations.
- Coordinates assigned programs and processes (e.g. advisement programs, peer counseling, etc.) for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for growth and achieving overall curriculum objectives.
- Counsels students, parents, and guardians (e.g. personal problems, general problem solving, at risk prevention, life skills, career tracking, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing student personal growth, maturity and success in school.
- Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
- Oversees the registration of new students for the purpose of ensuring proper, class placement, student orientation and understanding of the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
- Performs general and program and school specific functions as needed and or assigned for the purpose of supporting departmental and school activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Prepares written materials (e.g. reports, correspondence, audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
- Presents information for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
- Researches a variety of academic and student achievement issues for the purpose of providing up-to-date, accurate counsel to students.
- Serves as a liaison in a variety of issues (e.g. student support teams, court services, truancy officers, community and mentorship opportunities, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or facilitating communication.
- Supervises the maintenance and usage of student records for the purpose of ensuring proper usage to assist in student achievement while maintaining confidentiality.
Qualifications: Master's degree and appropriate school counseling certification through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.
