Position Summary
The Forensic Peer Support Specialist provides recovery-oriented support services to adults pursuing recovery from mental health and/or substance use challenges who are involved in the criminal justice system, including individuals on probation, parole, reentry programs, diversion programs, or transitioning from incarceration. The specialist uses lived experience with recovery and/or justice involvement to inspire hope, model recovery, connect clients with community resources, and support them in achieving their goals, overcoming barriers, increasing independence, and building successful lives in the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one peer support services in community settings.
- Assist clients with successful community reintegration following incarceration or justice involvement.
- Help clients identify recovery and re-entry goals and develop practical strategies to achieve them.
- Support clients in accessing housing, transportation, healthcare, employment, educational opportunities, and community resources.
- Teach coping skills, self-advocacy, problem-solving, and wellness strategies.
- Encourage compliance with treatment plans, court requirements, and supervision conditions when applicable.
- Facilitate recovery-focused groups and educational workshops.
- Write and maintain timely, accurate, and compliant client service notes documentation.
- Participate in team meetings and complete required training.
Qualifications
- Current North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) credential required.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Lived experience with mental health recovery, substance use recovery, justice involvement, or a combination of these experiences.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently in community settings.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver's license, and automobile insurance.
- Knowledge of community resources, reentry services, housing programs, and behavioral health systems.
- Basic computer skills
This is a 1099 independent contractor position. Peer Support Specialists coordinate client sessions directly with clients and receive agency-assigned clients while also having the opportunity to develop their own referral sources and grow their caseload.
