Position: Campaigns Director

Organization: RAVEN

Location: remote, anywhere in Canada

The Campaigns Director works as a campaigner, liaison with Nations and law firms, and planner of the annual campaigns arc. This role requires an in-depth understanding of Indigenous rights and issues, as well as a commitment to fostering respectful and culturally appropriate relationships with partner Nations. The Campaigns Director plays a pivotal role in raising awareness of RAVEN’s mission and building alliances with various stakeholders to keep the RAVEN team and donors up to date on campaign legal progress.

  • Campaigning knowledge and knowledge of legal industry
  • Attendance at events and travel
  • Communications skills including written and verbal
  • Administration of financials

Education And Experience Desired

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities.
  • Degree in law, Indigenous studies, social justice or another related field.
  • Experience supervising and managing staff in a remote working environment.
  • Deep knowledge and expertise in movement building for social justice movements that advocate for Indigenous rights. This particularly includes environmental justice.
  • Experience working with and/or collaborating with non-government organizations. Experience in the environmental sector is considered an asset.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • 3-5 years relevant experience and expertise required. Alternative credentials and community based experience are welcomed.

Salary range

$99,840 – $108,160

Working conditions

  • This is a hybrid position, with flexibility for remote work across Canada. In-office presence will be required at times in Victoria, BC.
  • This position involves working mainly indoors and may also involve occasional work at events which may be outdoors, or at other venues.
  • Occasional lifting of equipment such as computers, chairs, or comparable items up to fifteen (15) kilograms may be required
  • Extended periods working at a computer may be expected

Perform: Primary tasks and areas of responsibility

  • Relationship Management
    • Build strong relationships of trust with Indigenous partners, acting as the key point of contact for RAVEN while ensuring that RAVEN engages in respectful and culturally appropriate ways both with partner and host Nations. This includes regular meetings, travel to Indigenous communities to build relationships (could be as long as two weeks of travel at a time), and developing relationship pathways with Nations.
    • Meet regularly with law firms to build positive relations with law firm representatives, receive and provide financial updates, and discuss any relevant court proceeding updates to provide updates to RAVEN staff and relevant stakeholders
    • Lead and manage new litigation and funding request applications
    • Lead and oversee alliances with non-government organizations, environmental groups, unions, and Indigenous groups
    • Attend events and ceremonies hosted by partner Nations, visiting communities to further develop relationships with community members.
    • Attend meetings with RAVEN’s Board of Directors, providing key information about campaigns, hosting discussions about current applications of support, and other duties assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Campaigning
    • Develop high-level campaign strategies in collaboration with the Campaigns Manager and approval from the Executive Director. This includes, but is not limited to, strategies for narrative-changing, in-person organizing tactics, and NGO partnership management.
    • Lead key relationships with non-governmental organizations to deliver on reciprocal impact for Indigenous rights and environmental justice.
    • Travel to events as the key spokesperson with RAVEN, or delegate to Campaigns staff and contractors for specific events.
    • Represent RAVEN at legal proceedings and various events, meet with key stakeholders and movement allies, and help grow awareness of our mission.
    • Collaborate in the development of campaign fundraising plans alongside the Development Department, including targets and new funding streams
    • Lead and manage Nation approvals of workplans, messaging, and materials when necessary.
    • Oversee financial management of campaigns that includes invoice tracking, forecasting, and updating the funds raised for each campaign
  • Public Legal Education
    • Develop and oversee the development of public legal education materials and assets, providing high-level direction to the Campaigns Manager for development when necessary.
    • Review, edit, and approve campaign communications from other departments,helping build/write new campaign messaging for the website, blogs, and media.
  • People Management
    • Manage the workflow of the Campaigns Manager, including time-off requests, work performance, and overall workplace satisfaction.
    • Assist the Campaigns Manager in managing Campaigns contractors and staff, providing guidance and support when requested or as necessary.
    • Create annual workplans for the department with collaboration and feedback from Campaigns staff and contractors when appropriate.
  • Financial Management
    • Oversee, direct, and manage departmental overhead. Help inform campaign fundraising goals.
    • Approve and facilitate disbursements to Nations or Law firms.
    • Support a strong Due Diligence process when assessing applicants for funds or when approving campaign expenses.
    • Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring expenses are within allocated resources while maximizing fundraising, campaigning, and education potential.
    • Help support the creation of and track spending against departmental budgets.
    • Manage & oversee a corporate credit card alongside regular reconciliation.
    • Support financial and administrative accounting tasks for the Accountant as required.

  • Collaboration and engagement with internal staff and managers for maximum organizational effectiveness
  • Funds disbursed to partners are done in timely manner following all policies and procedures
  • Approved written material is impactful, accurate, and allows for innovative practices
  • Reporting staff are well-trained, feel supported, and know where to find information and resources
  • RAVEN’s technology supports its mission and goals within the campaigns department
  • RAVEN continues to seek and implement best practices in its operations

  • Nation approval for updates on campaign information for public use
  • Campaign expenses over spending limit authority
  • Finalization of annual workplans and budgets
  • Activities aligned with Strategic Plan activities and goals, targets
  • Establishing fundraising targets and goals in collaboration with Development
  • Policy development or changes, both internal and external with government/ other stakeholders

Input Only (involvement in decision is limited to providing input)

  • Organizational design and restructure
  • Operational management and analysis

Plan: Strategy, budget, and spending responsibility

  • Contributes to strategic planning as requested
  • Supports documentation required for draft annual report
