The Fort Wayne Goodwill can trace its roots back to 1936 when Reverend Helms proposed a federation of Goodwill Industries across northern Indiana. Today, we continue to flourish as we serve 10 county area in Northeast Indiana. As a 501c3 nonprofit organization, our mission is to create opportunities for people to achieve economic stability and build strong communities by offering job training, employment services, and other community-based programs. We support this mission through the eco-friendly collection and sale of donated goods. A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A JANITOR

As a Janitor at Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana, Inc., you play a vital role in supporting our mission of providing services to the community. Customers want to shop in clean, organized stores and your role makes that possible!

Essential Functions

As a janitor, you primary responsibility is to ensure the cleanliness of our retail store. You will also be interacting with donors and customers. Here's what you can expect:

  • Cleans and disinfects restrooms.
  • Dry mops and vacuums floors.
  • Wet mops floors.
  • Buffs floors.
  • Empties trash from stores and offices.
  • Sweeps and picks trash up from outside store each morning.
  • Cleans offices.
  • Washes windows and mirrors as necessary.
  • Keeps paper towel and toilet paper dispensers filled.
  • Sanitizes drinking fountains.
  • Cleans refrigerator.
  • Mows grass and pulls weeds, if necessary
  • Clean spills, and disinfects, if required.
  • Shovels snow and salts or sands sidewalks and walkways.
  • Move items to and from the staging area for truck loading and unloading.
  • Pre-sorts donations as required.
  • Accepts donations, distributes tax receipts and pre-sort donations by category.
  • Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling required.
  • Follows all safety rules and practices.
  • Performs all other duties as may be assigned by the Store Manager in the process of carrying out the mission of Goodwill Industries.
  • In order to promote customer and donor satisfaction it is mandatory for employees who come in contact with the public to maintain a positive work outlook and to project a pleasant, courteous, and helpful demeanor at all times when dealing with customers, donors, co workers, and clients.

Goodwill, your co-workers, and our customers depend on you to be at work as scheduled.

JOB PERFORMANCE

Reviewed upon initial hire at 30, 60 and 90 days, and annually thereafter, by the Store Manager.

EDUCATION

No specialized educational requirements

Experience

Minimum of one year work experience; previous janitorial experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills

Must to be able to distinguish between types of cleaning products.

Credentials/Licenses/Screening Requirements

  • Subject to background check.
  • Ability to work within the team concept.
  • Ability to plan work and organize tasks.
  • Subject to random alcohol and drug testing as specified in the Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Fully comply with Goodwill’s Code of Ethics.

COMMUNITY INTERACTION

Contact with customers, donors, and co-workers.

EQUIPMENT

  • Various production equipment including hand truck or dolly, pallet jack, and carts.
  • Gloves and safety glasses.
  • Chemicals, buckets, mops, brooms, and floor safety cones,
  • Vacuum and buffer.

Work that requires attention and requires the use of several readily understood rules and procedures in which the employee may make decisions that could affect the efficiency, accuracy, or correctness of work.

Heavy work: Pushing and pulling up to 100 pounds.

The ability to fully perform lifting and moving duties is mandatory.
