What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance & Facilities Technician position at GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER?
About the Role
This is a hands-on role at the largest provider of services to the hungry and homeless in the Cape Fear region. About half the job is technical and repair-focused — plumbing, drywall, painting, HVAC, small repairs — and about half is general upkeep and cleaning of our shelter, housing, and program facilities. We're upfront about that mix because we want someone who's genuinely looking for both, not someone who'll feel the cleaning work is beneath them.
This role sits inside an organization serving vulnerable individuals every day. You'll regularly interact with clients, volunteers, and staff, and we need someone who brings patience, respect, and professionalism to those interactions as consistently as they bring technical skill to a repair.
On an occasional basis, this role may involve cleanup of areas affected by biohazardous materials. This is always done with proper training and full PPE, in line with OSHA and agency policy — it is not a daily task, but it is a real part of working in an emergency shelter environment, and we want candidates to know that going in.
About Good Shepherd
Founded in 1983, Good Shepherd has grown to become the largest provider of services to the hungry and homeless in the Cape Fear region. Programs include a soup kitchen, food salvage program, day and night shelters, an on-site medical clinic, rehousing-focused case management, and supportive housing for homeless Veterans and chronically homeless individuals with disabilities. We have 40 part- and full-time staff and more than 500 volunteers, all working toward our mission: to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, and foster transition to housing.
What You'll Do
Technical & Repair Work
- Complete assigned work orders and preventative maintenance on facilities and grounds
- Make repairs in line with agency policy, safety standards, and applicable code requirements
- Use tools and equipment correctly and safely for assigned tasks
- Perform routine HVAC upkeep (filter changes, basic troubleshooting) and minor electrical repairs within scope, referring anything beyond that to a licensed contractor
- Complete unit/room "turnover" — move-out inspections and prep for new move-ins
Cleaning & Grounds
- Maintain grounds, common areas, and amenities: trash and debris pickup, pressure washing breezeways, general cleaning, painting as directed
- Occasionally assist with biohazard cleanup, always with training and PPE provided (see note above)
Administrative & Safety
- Follow procedures for materials, supplies, tools, and equipment, including tracking inventory
- Complete documentation and paperwork accurately and on time so requests and maintenance activity stay properly tracked
- Attend safety meetings, complete required OSHA/safety training, and report accidents or incidents promptly
- Be on call for after-hours emergencies on a rotating schedule with the Facilities team
Every Day
- Interact respectfully and professionally with clients experiencing homelessness, volunteers, coworkers, and the public
- Bring a strong work ethic, honesty, and dependability to the job
What We're Looking For
- Prior experience as a Maintenance or Facilities Technician preferred, but not required if you have relevant hands-on skills
- Familiarity with basic handyperson/light repair work: plumbing, drywall, small engine repair, tiling, painting, general maintenance
- Basic understanding of HVAC systems (filter changes, routine troubleshooting, recognizing when to call a licensed contractor)
- Basic understanding of minor electrical repairs (outlets, switches, fixtures) within code and safety limits
- Comfort using and maintaining industrial cleaning equipment and appliances
- Knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials (or willingness to be trained)
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and to take direction well
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
- High school diploma preferred, not required
A note on fit: If you have the skills but not the interest in working within a sensitive client setting — including the cleaning and occasional biohazard aspects of this job — this likely isn't the right role, and that's okay. We'd rather be upfront than have a mismatch down the line.
