About us:

18 Reasons is a nonprofit that increases food security through the power of home cooking. Our mission is to empower our community with the confidence and creativity needed to buy, cook, and eat good food every day. We offer food education programs to the community through two different channels. At our 18th Street Kitchen in San Francisco, paid classes reach curious home cooks with the means to pay for instruction. Through our free Community Programs, we offer grocery donations paired with free cooking and nutrition classes to families on a limited budget throughout the Bay Area. Our vision is to create equity and belonging through the transformative and healing power of home cooking.

About You

The Communications & Events Coordinator is a hands-on and solution-oriented person who works on the Development & Communications team supporting aspects of fundraising and donor engagement, marketing and communications, and department operations. You are passionate about food, effective communication, and bringing people together, and you love working independently to solve problems. We take special care to create a working team of positive, flexible, and driven people who are committed to service. A year of service at 18 Reasons is an opportunity to learn new skills and play a valuable role in serving the community.

Skills

You do not need to have a fundraising, communications, marketing or nonprofit background to succeed in this position, but you must possess critical thinking skills, be a sharp writer, detail oriented, organized, motivated, and eager to learn. In a nutshell, you will:

  • Help keep the development and communications team organized
  • Write words that inspire the community to contribute to our mission
  • Create social media and newsletters

This is an AmeriCorps position; you will serve for one year with 18 Reasons, ideally beginning on August 31st (flexible start date).

This is a full time AmeriCorps position where you will serve for one year with 18 Reasons.

Responsibilities

Communications & Marketing

  • Assist the Communications Manager with maintaining and growing 18 Reasons’ social media presence across platforms by creating and scheduling content, responding to comments and messages, and identifying opportunities to increase engagement.
  • Help create branded social media graphics, short videos, stories, and other digital content using Canva templates and other marketing design tools. .
  • Support storytelling efforts by collecting participant stories, testimonials, photos, and program highlights from staff, volunteers, and community members.
  • Build and send email newsletters using approved copy and templates; with training and support, contribute original content for necessary email campaigns and other communications materials.
  • Maintain and organize 18 Reasons’ photo, video, and testimonial library to ensure assets are easily accessible for communications and fundraising efforts.
  • Track and report on communications metrics, including email performance, website traffic, and social media engagement.
  • Assist with website updates and content management as needed.
  • Help maintain a communications calendar to support consistent messaging across channels.

Events & Community Engagement

  • Represent 18 Reasons at events and other outreach opportunities to promote our programs and mission.
  • Assist the Special Events Manager with event preparation, guest management, volunteer coordination, registration, and event-day logistics.
  • Support donor cultivation and fundraising events by helping with communications, marketing, and attendee engagement.
  • Capture photos, videos, and stories at events for use in future communications.

Organizational Culture

  • Contribute to the overall culture and growth of 18 Reasons by using our Culture Standards Guide as a tool for self-reflection, feedback, and ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in improvement projects, committees, and cross-department initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

  • Passionate about food, food justice, racial equity, community engagement, and communications.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an interest in storytelling and nonprofit marketing.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Creative, curious, and eager to learn new communications and fundraising skills.
  • Comfortable using social media platforms for professional purposes.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Experience, willingness, and ability to work with people from a variety of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds, with various lifestyles, sexual orientations, and ages.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends for events and community outreach activities.
  • Helpful technical skills: Google Workspace, Canva or other design software, social media management tools, basic website content management systems, and familiarity with databases or CRM systems.
  • Photography, video editing, graphic design, or content creation experience is a plus but not required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work at a computer the majority of the work day. General office duties include: computer work, filing, phone communication, copying. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable any qualified person to perform the essential job duties.

AmeriCorps Program Benefits

$3,284 monthly living allowance, paid biweekly ($21.65/hour)

Segal Education Award ($6,345) at the end of the service year
