Rec Zone Site Director

Description

The Rec Zone Afterschool Site Director is responsible for the daily operation, management, and overall supervision of a designated Rec Zone afterschool program site within Goochland County. This position ensures a safe, engaging, and structured environment for youth participants while supervising site-specific recreation staff.

The Site Director serves as the onsite point-of-contact for parents, school administration, and department leadership, ensuring high-quality programming that aligns with the mission and policies of Goochland County Parks and Recreation.

General Information

• Department: Parks and Recreation
• Reports To: Youth Program Coordinator
• Schedule: Monday – Friday (5 days/week)
• Hours: 1:30pm – 6:30pm/Daily, 25 hours per week.
  • Additional hours for training and check ins with Youth Coordinator.
• FLSA Status: Part-Time ($20.00/hr)

Essential Functions

Daily Operations & Program Management

• Oversee the complete day-to-day operations of the assigned RecZone afterschool site.
• Organize and implement daily schedules, including structured recreation activities, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, enrichment programs, and snack times.
• Ensure strict adherence to Goochland County safety protocols, participant check-in/check-out, and emergency response procedures.
• Maintain accurate daily records, including participant rosters, attendance logs, behavior reports, and incident/accident forms.

Staff Supervision & Leadership

• Provide direct leadership, guidance, and daily assignments to on-site afterschool Recreation Assistants.
• Assist the Youth Program Coordinator with on-site staff training and employee performance monitoring.
• Model positive behavior management techniques and foster a collaborative, supportive team environment.

Communication & Community Relations

• Serve as the primary, professional contact for parents and guardians; handle daily sign-outs, updates, and parent inquires.
• Maintain strong, cooperative relationships with the school’s principal, custodial staff, and administrative team.
• Provide timely updates to the Youth Program Coordinator regarding site successes, staff performance, supply needs, and any participant or parent inquires.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of youth programming, childhood development, and recreational activity planning.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage, motivate, and direct a team of part-time Recreation Assistants.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to handle parent interactions with diplomacy, empathy, and professionalism.
• Highly organized, punctual, and capable of managing administrative paperwork accurately.

Education, Experience and Training

• Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required. Experience in recreation management, education, child development, or a related field is highly preferred.
• Experience: One to two years of experience working with youth, recreation programs, summer camps, afterschool care, childcare, or work in an educational setting preferred.
• Certifications: Possess or is willing to obtain:
  • First Aid / CPR / AED Certification
• Background Clearance: Must successfully pass a comprehensive criminal background check, central registry check, and drug screening prior to employment.

As part of employment with Goochland County, all employees are required to complete Emergency preparedness and incident management training courses as directed or requested.
