DESCRIPTION: Responsibilities include the prosecution of criminal cases, including misdemeanor and felony charges, in the General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court, and Circuit Court, for the County of Goochland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. This full-time position requires working effectively with paralegals, victim-witness director, law enforcement officers, and Clerk’s Office personnel. The position may also include mentoring and supervisory functions of another attorney. Position requires exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment in determining the proper course of action in a variety of legal cases and situations. Unwavering tact, courtesy, and discretion are required in frequent contact with crime victims, suspects, law enforcement, judicial officials, public officials, and the public.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Assists with the prosecution of major court cases and routine criminal matters such as probation violations, bond hearings, pre-trial/post-trial motions, traffic violations, and sentencings.Conduct cases in court to include examinations, cross examinations, and summaries.Provide additional support and guidance through trials and negotiations.Prepare cases, briefs, and interview parties related to cases.Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships.Must be familiar with appellate pleadings and procedures.Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Graduation from an accredited law school with JD degree or licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virgnia. Criminal law trial experience is required; five (5) years prosecutorial experience preferred.Supervisory experience desired.In the years ahead the CWA Office will be modernizing and embracing efficiencies. This includes reducing, where possible, the reliance on paper files. Strong organizational and computer skills are required. Pre-employment drug testing, criminal background check, and education/degree verification are required. The work of the CWA Office requires compliance with confidentiality and security protocols. The Office and all persons working for the Commonwealth’s Attorney will adhere to Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance standards. The position, therefore, requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position primarily consists of sedentary work in an office environment requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; work requires fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing and exchanging ideas by means of spoken word; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written and computer data, reviewing accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; sitting is required for long periods of time.WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a relatively safe, and secure work environment.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.
