What are the responsibilities and job description for the Flatbed Truck Driver position at Gonzalez Group?
Job Summary:
We are seeking a reliable and experienced Flatbed Truck Driver to transport structural steel materials including pipe, plates, and miscellaneous steel items, along with pallets of finished products. Driver will also be transporting material to and from Bowling Green Ohio at least 3 times a week using our dry van. The driver will be responsible for safely securing, transporting, and delivering loads to construction sites, fabrication shops, and other customer locations in compliance with all DOT regulations and company safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a Class A CDL semi-truck with flatbed trailer to transport steel products.
- Ensure load is balanced and compliant with legal weight and size limits.
- Inspect vehicle and trailer before and after trips to ensure safe operating condition; report and document any defects or maintenance needs.
- Maintain accurate driver logs (ELDs) and required paperwork such as BOLs (Bill of Lading).
- Plan routes and meet delivery schedules while complying with all traffic laws and company policies.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch and site contacts to ensure smooth delivery operations.
- Adhere to all DOT, FMCSA (federal motor carrier safety administration) and company safety regulations and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of 2 years of flatbed driving experience, preferably hauling steel or heavy loads.
- Strong knowledge of proper load securement techniques (chains, binders, tarps, etc.).
- Ability to safely operate and maneuver vehicle in tight job sites and urban settings.
- Experience with oversize and overweight loads is a plus.
- Ability to pass DOT physical, drug test, and background check.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and secure heavy chains, straps, and tarps (up to 75 lbs).
- Climb onto and off of trailers to inspect and secure loads.
- Work in varying weather conditions as needed.
Work Schedule & Travel:
- Typically, regional some OTR (Over-the-Road)
- Generally, follows a 48-hour work week, though hours may shift based on workload and business needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience hauling structural steel.
- Familiarity with construction site deliveries.
- Forklift or crane signal certification is a plus.
