Job Purpose

Assists with the direction of the Law Career Services Office, to prepare law students and GU Law alumni to secure successful opportunities in a wide variety of careers. Provides both curricular and co-curricular education to students to further their professional development and understanding of legal careers. Teaches and supervises students in the externship program, providing instruction, feedback, and graded evaluation.

Essential Functions

  • 50% - Administration of Externship Program
    • Liaise with externship placements in the community, as directed by the Director, in support of growing a high-quality externship program.
    • Working with the Director to solve problems that come up for students and/or supervising attorneys in the context of the externship program.
    • At the request of the Director, participate in and represent Gonzaga Law in regional and national law school externship associations.
    • Engage in other externship-related duties as assigned by the Assistant Dean, Professional Development and Externships.
  • 25% - Educational Programming
    • Oversee a robust offering of career exploration and professional development programming throughout the year, including weekly offerings during the academic year.
    • Teach 1-2 sections of a one-credit externship seminar each semester, including reviewing student assignments and grading their work.
    • Annually assess co-curricular needs and arrange for external presenters.
    • Co-teach a one-credit, 2 semester course on professional development each academic year, including assessing student performance and reviewing their assignments.
  • 15% - Individual Student counseling
    • Develop and maintain trusting relationships with students and alumni in order to provide them in-depth, individual counseling and assessment regarding their career goals.
    • Stay abreast of judicial clerkship and federal hiring program requirements and serve as primary career counselor for those tracks.
    • Maintain detailed counseling notes and updated student profile information on career database.
    • Track students' progress on their goals throughout their law school career and offer support, guidance, and resources.
    • Counsel students on opportunities to fulfill their experiential learning requirement and assist them in participating in the externship program, should they choose that route.
  • 5% - Document Review and Interview Preparation Program
    • Take lead in reviewing, revising, and providing feedback ta high volume (300 ) of law student and alumni application materials submitted throughout the year.
    • Oversee office's response times and work with Assistant Dean to assure high quality product and timeliness in office's document review process.
    • Oversee ongoing mock interview program and coach students to improve their performance.
  • 5% - Mentorship and Networking Programs
    • Develop relationships with alumni and non-alumni attorneys throughout the country to provide mentorship tour students.
    • Establish and maintain a formal local and distance student/attorney mentor program.
    • Work with specialty bar associations and identify high-interest practice areas to create and host networking events for interested students, both on and off campus.

    3 years

    In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education.

    Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and regulations

    Ability to work flexible schedule including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

    Preferred Qualifications

    5-10 years of varied legal work experience (private firm, judicial clerkship, public interest).

    Work experience in higher education.

    Career counseling experience in an academic setting.

    The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $36.78 - $42.91 per hour

    Pay Range

    Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): 36.78

    Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): 49.04

    Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): 61.30
