What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Manager position at Goldstein Advisors?
About Us:
Goldstein Advisors is a client-centric, Registered Investment Advisor dedicated to empowering our clients and team members to live with confidence, clarity, and peace of mind. We pride ourselves on building trusted, long-term relationships with our clients, delivering tailored solutions with integrity, transparency, and a commitment to their financial well-being.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Tax Manager to join our growing tax practice within our firm. This mid-level role combines hands-on tax preparation with direct client work: you will prepare individual and business returns, meet with clients to review their results, and provide proactive tax advice alongside our advisors and financial planners. You will work under the guidance of our Tax Lead and carry engagements from document collection through filing. This position suits a professional with two to four years of tax experience who is ready to take on more client-facing responsibility and to help clients see how their tax picture fits their broader financial plan.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Preparation and Compliance:
- Prepare individual and business income tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1065, and 1120-S and the related state filings, for review by the Tax Lead.
- Reconcile client source documents, including brokerage 1099s, K-1s, and cost basis records, against the account data the firm already holds.
- Prepare extensions and quarterly estimated payment calculations, and draft responses to IRS and state notices.
- Manage document collection, e-filing, and delivery of completed returns in coordination with the Tax Administrator, and keep status tracking and client records current in the tax workflow system.
- Client Meetings and Tax Advice:
- Meet with clients periodically to review their completed returns, explain the results, and walk through what changed from the prior year.
- Provide proactive tax advice on the year ahead, including withholding, estimated payments, and the timing of income and deductions.
- Respond to client tax questions with professional, empathetic communication, and bring complex technical matters to the Tax Lead.
Tax Planning Support:
- Prepare tax projections and scenario analyses, such as Roth conversions, gain harvesting, and charitable giving strategies.
- Identify planning opportunities during return preparation and bring them to the client’s advisor.
- Coordinate with advisors, financial planners, and outside professionals (e.g., attorneys, CPAs) so tax strategy supports each client’s financial plan.
- Stay current on federal and Wisconsin tax law changes affecting individuals and closely held businesses.
Team Collaboration and Professional Development:
- Work closely with the Tax Lead, advisors, and client service team to deliver a seamless client experience.
- Contribute ideas to improve the tax practice’s processes and service delivery as it grows.
- Actively pursue professional development, including the CPA or Enrolled Agent credential, with firm support.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field.
- 2 to 4 years of experience preparing individual or business income tax returns, or both, in a public accounting firm, tax practice, or wealth management firm.
- CPA or Enrolled Agent credential strongly preferred; candidates actively pursuing either will be strongly considered.
- Solid working knowledge of individual taxation, including investment income, capital gains and cost basis, retirement account distributions, and pass-through income reported on K-1s.
- Experience with Wisconsin returns and multistate filings is a plus.
- Proficiency with professional tax preparation and research software and with Excel.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to explain a return and discuss planning opportunities with clients in plain language.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage many open engagements at once through filing season, including extended hours when deadlines require them.
- Commitment to fiduciary responsibility, ethical conduct, confidentiality, and client-first principles.
Why Join Us?
- Opportunity to make a meaningful impact on clients’ lives by connecting their tax work to their broader financial goals.
- Room to grow with a fast-growing firm and an even faster-growing tax practice.
- Collaborative, supportive team environment with a focus on professional growth and development.
- Competitive salary, performance-based bonuses, and comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.).
- A desire to work in-person with a phenomenal team of like-minded individuals.
- Access to cutting-edge tools, resources, and ongoing training to enhance your expertise.
