You will play a key role in supporting GVEA's cybersecurity and compliance programs, identifying and mitigating cyber and physical risks, protecting information and control systems, and strengthening incident response and recovery efforts. You'll collaborate across IT, Operational Technology (OT), Engineering, Legal, Human Resources, and other areas of the organization to help ensure GVEA remains secure and compliant.

A LITTLE ABOUT US

GVEA is an electric cooperative that owns and maintains 3,491 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 35 substations, and 9 generating facilities. Our system is interconnected with Fort Wainwright, Eielson AFB, Fort Greely, Clear Space Force Station, the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and all electric utilities in the Alaska Railbelt, which extends from Homer to Fairbanks. YOUR ROLE AS THE CYBER SECURITY ENGINEER

As a full-time Cyber Security Engineer at Golden Valley Electric Association, you will play an important role in protecting GVEA's people, data, infrastructure, systems, and cyber assets. You will help maintain, update, and improve cybersecurity systems and programs while supporting compliance with applicable cybersecurity requirements.

In this role, you will identify and mitigate cyber and physical security risks, support security compliance assessments and audits, review suspicious activity, and work with technology teams to ensure networks, firewalls, and system access are properly secured and monitored. You will also support cybersecurity testing, penetration testing, tabletop exercises, and other initiatives designed to strengthen GVEA's security posture.

You will also help develop and test incident response and recovery plans, document cybersecurity incidents and near misses, and collaborate across IT, Operational Technology (OT), Engineering, Legal, Public Relations, Human Resources, and other departments. From strengthening cybersecurity policies and procedures to supporting standards such as RRC CIP, NERC CIP, PCI DSS, NIST 800-171, CMMC, and NIST CSF, you will have an opportunity to help protect the systems and infrastructure essential to GVEA's operations.

What you need to be successful

Success in the full-time Cyber Security Engineer position at Golden Valley Electric Association requires a strong foundation in cybersecurity, technical knowledge, and effective communication. Candidates should have an understanding of cybersecurity standards such as RRC CIP, NERC CIP, PCI DSS, and DFARS, along with the skills needed to communicate technical information and processes effectively.

The successful candidate will be organized, capable of providing leadership, and comfortable working in an environment with changing priorities and deadlines. This position requires a minimum of four years of cybersecurity experience and a bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent amount of relevant work experience.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of cybersecurity standards, including RRC CIP, NERC CIP, PCI DSS, and DFARS.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and cybersecurity trends.
  • Minimum of four years of experience in Cyber Security.
  • Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Security, Business, or an equivalent amount of relevant work experience.
