A well-established and growing Bay Area construction firm specializing in large-scale commercial and industrial projects is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting operations. This is a key leadership position reporting directly to the CFO, responsible for overseeing all aspects of corporate and project accounting, internal controls, and financial reporting.
Position Summary
The Controller will manage the day-to-day accounting operations and ensure the integrity of financial data across multiple construction entities. This individual will drive continuous improvement in processes, systems, and reporting while supporting project management, operations, and ownership with timely and actionable financial insights.
You’ll oversee a small but capable accounting team and play a crucial role in supporting strategic decisions that shape the company’s financial performance and long-term success.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of general ledger management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and job cost accounting.
- Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial reporting.
- Prepare consolidated financial statements across multiple related entities and divisions.
- Review and analyze job cost reports, WIP schedules, and project profitability with project managers and executives.
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes, identifying cost trends and financial risks.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures in compliance with GAAP.
- Oversee cash management, including daily monitoring of cash flow and coordination of intercompany transfers.
- Coordinate with external CPA firms on audits, reviews, and tax filings.
- Evaluate and enhance accounting software, systems, and integrations (e.g., Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint, or Foundation).
- Mentor, train, and develop accounting team members to ensure accuracy, accountability, and growth.
- Partner with the CFO and senior leadership on financial strategy, capital planning, and risk management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA highly preferred.
- 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role within the construction, heavy civil, or related industry.
- Expertise in job cost accounting, WIP analysis, and multi-entity consolidations.
- Hands-on experience with construction accounting software such as Sage 300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, or Foundation.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups, and data modeling.
- Strong leadership skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to balance detail orientation and big-picture strategy.
