Job Summary

Duties
- Provide real-time interpretation of spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa in diverse settings such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, legal proceedings, and community events.
- Conduct over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) services to support remote communication needs across different languages and contexts.
- Deliver educational interpretation for classrooms, training sessions, workshops, and seminars to ensure comprehension and engagement for deaf students or participants.
- Facilitate bilingual communication by translating complex concepts accurately while maintaining the tone and intent of the original message.
- Collaborate with clients to understand specific communication preferences and adapt interpretation techniques accordingly.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times while managing multiple assignments efficiently.
- Keep detailed records of interpretation sessions when required, including notes on terminology or specific client needs.
Experience
- Proven experience as an American Sign Language interpreter in educational, medical, legal, or community settings.
- Multilingual skills are highly desirable to support diverse populations; fluency in additional languages enhances versatility.
- Strong understanding of linguistics principles related to ASL and spoken languages to ensure precise interpretation.
- Demonstrated ability to perform over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) with clarity and professionalism.
- Experience providing interpretation in educational environments is preferred to support academic success for deaf students.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey messages clearly while respecting cultural nuances.
- Certification from a recognized interpreting organization (such as the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf - RID) is preferred but not mandatory; ongoing professional development is encouraged.
