Position Title: Director of Student Life

Department Name: Office of Student Life, Division of Student Success

Position Reports To: Associate Dean of Students

FLSA STATUS: Salaried

Salary Range: Depending upon qualifications and experience

Benefits: The University's comprehensive benefits program

Days & Hours: Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Standard work schedule is 9:00 am to 5:30 PM, may be adjusted. Flexible schedule may require evening and weekend hours during peak periods.

Location: In person, open to hybrid

BASIC FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF JOB:

With the support of the Office of Student Life team, develop, plan, and execute an active and engaging student life program for all students with the goals of promoting student engagement and improving student satisfaction and retention. This position is critical in creating a welcoming, vibrant student experience and sense of belong and community at Golden Gate University.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Hire and supervise full-time staff and student assistants, including hiring, scheduling, assigning work, reviewing performance, staff development, and recommending salary increases, promotions, or terminations.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Director of Student Life, oversee office hosted events both in-person and online including the development, coordination, and implementation, including but not limited to the Student Success Orientations and Welcome Weeks, and events related to social, cultural, community service, museums, outdoors, and sporting events.
  • Coordinate Campus Weeks including communications marketing and awareness of events. Develop and implement student programs hosted by the Office of Student Life.
  • Develop and lead implementation of a strategic plan to build community, belonging, and leadership development among the many student populations, including online and in-person activities.
  • Develop objectives and assessment plans for student engagement initiatives. Oversees the comprehensive assessment of the Office of Student Life and activities.
  • Develop policies and procedures for student life, including risk management. Provide student support on issues related to student services, university policies, and department processes.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on relevant technology resources with options and vendors.
  • Update and maintain Student Handbook.
  • Manage Office of Student Life related budget.
  • Support the Associate Dean of Students in the oversight of the Student Government Association, including developing a framework for effective student leadership, training, preparation, and oversight of the SGA executive board.
  • Assist with student conduct and Title IX, as requested by the Associate Dean of Students.
  • Support the Associate Dean of Students with planning and implementing commencement.
  • Support the Associate Dean of Students with protecting minors on campus.
  • Along with the Associate Dean of Students, collaborate with various areas on campus to provide support to other campus programs and joint activities.
  • Collaborate with the Director of International Student Services on housing, insurance, and related services for all student populations, as well as collaborating on programming activities for international students.
  • Respond to emergency and crisis situations, and make appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Provide coverage of student emergencies during off-hours and weekends, on an on-call basis, as needed.
  • Promote effective relationships and work collaboratively with all university departments and programs.
  • Serve on university committees as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education requirement:
    • Required: Masters degree in counseling, student affairs, or similar.
  • Years of experience:
    • Four to ten years related experience and/or training.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Required: University student life and affairs.
    • Preferred: Knowledge or experience in student conduct
  • Direct job-related requirements: Required
    • Experience supervising staff.
    • Risk management in student life and/or affairs.
  • Skills and abilities:
    • Ability to learn, respect, and contribute to the Universitys mission and values.
    • Strong organizational, planning, analytical, problem solving, and interpersonal skills.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including effective public speaking skills.
    • Ability to manage projects and balance multiple priorities while maintaining a positive outlook.
    • Strong leadership and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to take initiative to organize, follow through with complex tasks and meet deadlines.
    • Strong orientation towards taking ownership of projects and assignments. Able to be proactive with projects, assignments, and process improvements.
    • Ability to anticipate potential issues and take necessary action to mitigate them.
    • Ability to successfully work both independently and collaboratively.
    • Competence with and commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
    • Ability to establish effective working relationships, professional rapport, and effectively accomplish work within a university setting that includes a wide array of individuals, groups, policies, and processes.
    • Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position.
