Position Summary

The District's Engineering Department has an immediate opening for a paid Civil Engineering student intern. This internship program provides students with the opportunity to transition from college to the full-time workforce through hands-on training and knowledge sharing in both office and job site settings. Students can either work part-time or full-time depending on their class schedule. At its discretion, the District may offer a full-time entry level position of Junior Civil Engineer to recent graduates who filed job applications with the District and met the minimum requirements of the position. Successful participants of the program are eligible to receive a Student Loan Forgiveness of $3,000 to be applied to their outstanding student loans once they enter the post-graduation employment with the District.

This can be a scanned copy of your current semester class schedule OR an official letter of current academic enrollment from your institution. The document should show the student's full name, name of the academic institution, and the degree program enrolled in.

Essential Responsibilities

* Assists in reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications, and cost estimates for a variety of construction, repair and maintenance projects.

* Assists in inspecting District's facilities and preparing inspection reports.

* Assists in inspecting construction projects and preparing inspection reports.

* Performs quantity calculations based on design plans.

* Assists in collection of material samples for laboratory analysis.

* Assists in assembling construction bid documents.

* Assists in processing construction contract change orders.

* Learns and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable work assignments.

* Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.

* Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited and recognized undergraduate or postgraduate civil engineering program during the Spring 2026 semester. Enrollment may be full-time or part-time.

  • Applicants must have completed a minimum of two (2) years of study toward a civil engineering degree, including foundational coursework in mathematics, physics, and introductory civil engineering principles.

  • Applicants may be at any stage beyond their second year of study; completion of the final year is not required to be eligible.

  • Proof of enrollment will be required prior to the start of the internship.


Experience/Skills:

  • Must possess intermediate-level computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Word).
  • Familiarity with engineering software (e.g. AutoCAD, Civil 3D) is preferred but not required.


Work Requirements:

  • Must be able to work on-site in the District's San Francisco office on designated days during the internship program. Remote work may be considered on other days with supervisor approval.
  • Interns prior to their final year of study may be eligible to work full-time during the summer academic break, subject to operational needs.

  • Interns in their final year of study may be eligible to work part-time, with schedules arranged around academic commitments.




Desirable Qualifications: A current, valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record. Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.



Physical Requirement: May inspect construction work on the Golden Gate Bridge, other structures, and buildings, climb scaffolds, catwalks, and ladders. Work from heights. Work outside in all weather conditions. Work over water. Carry harness and test or inspection equipment. Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen. Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Routine use of computer, telephone, and other office equipment. Ability to travel to District facilities and projects.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic principles of civil engineering, including construction methods, materials, and design fundamentals.
  • Mathematics and physics as applied to civil engineering calculations.
  • Technical writing used for construction project documentation, contracts, and bid preparation.
  • Safety practices and regulations applicable to construction and field work.


Skills in and/or Ability to:

  • Demonstrate intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Word)
  • Perform basic quantity calculations from design plans.
  • Basic inspection and report-writing skills.
  • Collect and document material samples accurately.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Follow instructions and procedures under supervision.
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with employees, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Learn and apply safety rules and safe work practices.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Adapt to a variety of construction, design or planning tasks as assigned.


Students will receive further communication from the District if selected for this internship opportunity. Selected candidates are expected to begin on May 4, 2025 (Monday); however, the District can provide flexibility on the start date as needed.
