What are the responsibilities and job description for the Founding Columnist - Independent Film Reviews position at Gold Standards Media?
Role Description
This is a contract-based, remote role for a Founding Columnist specializing in independent film reviews for our recurring column: The Screening Room. The Founding Columnist will conduct in-depth research, write engaging reviews, and deliver well-crafted articles that reflect a keen understanding of the indie film industry.
This role is for someone who cares deeply about the craft of filmmaking — particularly in independent cinema — and who enjoys helping others discover serious work that deserves to become widely known.
Gold Standards is a quarterly magazine (launching Summer 2026) for entrepreneurs committed quality, craftsmanship, creativity, and high standards of excellence in their work . Alongside strategy and leadership writing, each issue includes curated cultural criticism intended to develop taste, judgment, and attention — the inner disciplines behind meaningful achievement.
The Screening Room will introduce readers to independent filmmakers whose work reflects clarity of vision, technical excellence, and artistic & cultural contribution.
We are especially interested in reviewers who:
• actively follow independent and international cinema
• pay close attention to directing, cinematography, editing, and storytelling craft
• enjoy discovering emerging filmmakers
• write with discernment rather than reaction
• already maintain (or would like to build) a serious review platform of their own (Substack, YouTube, blog, etc.)
The purpose of this column is to help readers encounter outstanding filmmaking by indie filmmakers and understand why it matters.
The Founding Columnist for The Screening Room will contribute four reviews (approximately 600–1000 words each) during the magazine’s first publication year (Summer through Spring). Reviews may be adapted from the writer’s own platform into magazine form.
An honorarium of $100 will be provided at the conclusion of the first year (Spring 2027), with opportunities for expanded opportunities and compensation as the magazine grows.
If you are someone who regularly seeks out independent films and enjoys writing about the craft behind them — or if someone comes to mind who would be a strong fit — we would be delighted to hear from you.
