What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Numismatist position at Gold Standard Auctions?
The Senior Numismatist will serve as the lead authority on U.S. and world numismatics within our organization. This role is responsible for evaluating high-value consignments, authenticating and grading coins and currency, guiding inventory and pricing strategy, and mentoring junior team members. We are looking for someone with a minimum of 5–10 years of experience in professional numismatics, with a deep knowledge of U.S. coinage and strong familiarity with foreign issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Authenticate, grade, and value U.S. and world coins and currency using professional standards (PCGS, NGC, ANA, etc.)
- Evaluate and price high-end consignments for auction
- Write compelling, detailed descriptions for premium lots
- Lead internal coin intake and verification process, ensuring catalog accuracy
- Act as the primary point of contact for major consignors and high-value clients
- Mentor and train junior numismatists and support staff
- Stay current on market trends, pricing data, and key auction results
- Occasionally assist with or appear in live-stream auctions and marketing content
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5–10 years of experience in professional numismatics (coin dealer, auction house, grading service, or similar)
- Expert knowledge of U.S. coins and paper money, including key dates, varieties, and authentication techniques
- Strong working knowledge of foreign coinage and bullion markets (preferred)
- Proficiency in coin grading standards (PCGS, NGC, ANA)
- Experience preparing items for third-party grading submission
- Excellent writing skills for cataloging and item descriptions
- Ability to manage and prioritize a high volume of inventory
- Strong communication skills and professionalism with clients and staff
Preferred Experience:
- Past work at a major auction house, coin shop, or grading service
- ANA certification or equivalent numismatic credentials
- Access to or knowledge of market tools such as CDN Greysheet, Red Book, PCGS Auction Prices Realized
- Experience hosting educational content, live auctions, or valuation events
