Job Summary:

The Wastewater Technician is responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of the wastewater treatment system at the assigned facility. This role supports safe, compliant, and efficient wastewater operations by executing established procedures, collecting samples, maintaining records, and responding to operational issues.

This position plays a hands-on role in ensuring wastewater processes function as intended while promptly escalating abnormalities, alarms, or compliance concerns to supervisory leadership. This role performs wastewater treatment activities under established procedures and does not hold regulatory license authority.

Key Responsibilities:

Wastewater System Operations

  • Operate wastewater treatment equipment and systems in accordance with established SOPs and permit requirements.
  • Monitor gauges, meters, control panels, and process parameters.
  • Adjust chemical feeds, flows, and basic controls as directed to maintain proper treatment performance.
  • Respond to alarms, system upsets, or abnormal conditions; notify the Wastewater Supervisor as required.

Sampling, Testing & Monitoring

  • Collect wastewater samples in accordance with approved sampling protocols.
  • Perform basic field testing (e.g., pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen) as required.
  • Prepare samples for laboratory testing and ensure proper labeling, handling, and documentation.
  • Record and report test results accurately and timely.

Documentation & Recordkeeping

  • Maintain daily logs, operating records, and inspection checklists.
  • Document chemical usage, system adjustments, maintenance activities, and observations.
  • Ensure records are complete, accurate, and available for review.

Maintenance & Housekeeping

  • Perform routine inspections, cleaning, and basic maintenance of wastewater equipment.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and corrective actions as directed.
  • Maintain housekeeping and organization of wastewater treatment areas.
  • Safely handle, store, and use chemicals in accordance with training and safety guidelines.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None. This position has no direct reports.

Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of wastewater treatment processes or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to follow written procedures and operational instructions.
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with industrial equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize abnormal conditions.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required. Technical coursework or wastewater-related training preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Prior experience in wastewater treatment, utilities, or industrial operations preferred.

  • Wastewater Operations Fundamentals - Ability to perform daily tasks following established procedures.
  • Attention to Detail & Documentation - Ability to accurately record data and follow procedures.
  • Safety Awareness - Commitment to safe work practices and use of PPE.
  • Problem Recognition & Escalation - Ability to identify abnormal conditions and report issues promptly.
  • Mechanical Aptitude - Ability to inspect, clean, and assist with maintenance of equipment.
  • Reliability & Shift Accountability - Ability to consistently report to work as scheduled, maintain system coverage, and complete assigned operational checks and tasks without lapses.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and inspect equipment for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including boots, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, or respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
