Job Internal Title: Cavern Naturalist

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dependable, and highly motivated Cavern Naturalist to join our team. In this role, you will lead guided walking tours while educating visitors about the cavern’s history, geology, and natural features in an engaging and memorable way.

Qualified team members will also receive specialized training to lead our Expedition Tours, which explore deeper and more challenging sections of the cave. These tours typically last two to four hours and provide opportunities for additional responsibility, professional growth, and hands-on cave interpretation.

Cavern Naturalists also assist with daily Visitor Center operations, customer service, retail sales, property upkeep, and other tasks that help create a safe and enjoyable experience for every guest.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct engaging guided walking tours of the cavern while sharing historical, cultural, ecological, and geological information.
  • Safely lead Expedition Tours into deeper sections of the cave after successfully completing the required training.
  • Study and retain important information about the cavern’s history, ecosystem, geology, and unique formations.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently with visitors, answer questions, encourage participation, and provide excellent customer service.
  • Operate the point-of-sale system accurately, process purchases, handle payments, and provide correct change.
  • Complete training for opening and closing duties.
  • Assist with general Visitor Center operations, including housekeeping, landscaping, merchandise restocking, and maintaining food and beverage inventory.
  • Restock gemstone mining bags and help maintain the gemstone mining sluice area.
  • Assist with basic maintenance projects and property upkeep.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and help maintain a safe environment for guests and coworkers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience with interpretive programs, guided tours, public speaking, education, outdoor recreation, or a related field is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups and engaging with visitors of all ages.
  • Dependable, professional, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Willing and able to learn detailed historical, geological, and safety information.
  • Physically capable of standing and walking for extended periods, navigating stairs and uneven cave surfaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy items.
  • Comfortable working in enclosed cave environments.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.

We are committed to providing a safe, positive, and rewarding work environment. This position offers opportunities to develop public-speaking skills, expand your knowledge of natural history and geology, and advance into expedition-tour guiding and other areas of responsibility.

If you are passionate about natural history, education, outdoor experiences, and working with people, we encourage you to apply.
