This position offers a unique opportunity in the dynamic, cutting edge and ever-evolving area of data privacy and cybersecurity. The Privacy & Cybersecurity Associate’s role is to advise clients on cybersecurity and data privacy issues with a growing team of Shareholders and Associates, in all phases of the practice group’s work. Our team advises clients on a full spectrum of legal matters including proactive cybersecurity and privacy compliance planning, breach response, technology contracting, AI guidance, regulatory investigation and litigation management.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Advise clients in responding to cybersecurity incidents and data breaches.
- Provide subject matter support on mergers and acquisitions, including data privacy and cybersecurity due diligence from pre-deal through post-closing.
- Draft and negotiate agreements related to technology, AI, data privacy, data sharing and information security.
- Advise clients on data privacy and security laws, including GDPR, HIPAA, GLBA, CCPA, consumer protection as well as similar state laws and regulations.
- Advise clients on best practices related to data governance, including AI.
- Apply general knowledge of privacy and data security regimes in the US and in the EU to develop best practices.
- Draft cybersecurity policies and conduct tabletop exercises with clients.
- Assist with managing technology disputes.
- Communicate with supervising attorneys on recommendations on related compliance regimes, enforcement trends and privacy policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- J.D. from ABA accredited law school.
- Admitted to practice or eligible for admission to practice in the State of Wisconsin.
- The ideal candidate would have:
- Experience as a junior associate at a leading law firm or comparable in-house counsel position.
- A Certified Information Privacy Professional Certification (i.e. CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM).
- Experience in cyber-incident response, security and privacy program implementation, or AI governance.
- Superior organizational and time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and comfort with telephonic and face-to-face communications.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team.
- Proven ability to work within fast-paced team environment with multiple deadlines and demands both internally and externally.
