Brewer – Goat Island Brewing

Cullman, Alabama

Goat Island Brewing is an established production brewery and taproom in Cullman, Alabama. We take beer seriously and are looking for an experienced brewer who does the same.

Our priorities are straightforward: make excellent, consistent beer; keep the brewery clean and organized; operate safely; take care of the equipment; and work together as a team.

This is a hands-on brewing position. We are looking for someone who understands that working in a brewery means much more than running the brewhouse. On any given day, you may be brewing, working in the cellar, packaging beer, cleaning equipment, troubleshooting a problem, or helping maintain the brewery.

What You’ll Do

The Brewer will be involved in all aspects of brewery production, including:

  • Brewing beer and operating the brewhouse
  • Cellar work, fermentation and beer transfers
  • Monitoring fermentation and helping maintain beer quality and consistency
  • Cleaning and sanitizing tanks, lines, hoses and production equipment
  • Operating, cleaning and changing over canning and kegging equipment
  • Packaging beer into cans and kegs
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance
  • Troubleshooting production and equipment problems
  • Using hand and power tools as needed
  • Maintaining accurate production and brewing records
  • Keeping the brewery clean, organized and production-ready
  • Working with the rest of the brewing team to meet production needs
  • Making safety, quality and sanitation priorities every day

A normal production day is approximately eight hours and may include several different types of work. We are a small brewery operation, so we need people who are willing and able to pitch in wherever the work needs to be done.

What We’re Looking For

We are primarily looking for brewery experience, judgment, mechanical ability and a strong work ethic.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • At least three years of experience brewing
  • Brewing education or equivalent practical brewing experience
  • Good understanding of brewing, fermentation, cellar operations and sanitation
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Experience with brewery packaging equipment
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools and measuring instruments
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems rather than simply report them
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality and cleanliness
  • Dependability and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well as part of a small team

We are willing to consider candidates with different levels of experience.

Compensation will be based on the experience and capability you bring to the brewery.

Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, handle kegs and brewery materials, stand and walk for extended periods, and regularly bend, reach, twist and perform the physical work associated with brewery production.

Benefits

Goat Island Brewing offers:

  • Competitive compensation based on experience
  • Generous paid time off
  • Holiday pay
  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Employee discounts in our taproom

Why Cullman?

If you have never considered Cullman, Alabama, take a closer look.

Cullman is a growing North Alabama city of about 20,000 people located directly on I-65 between Birmingham and Huntsville. The city's population has increased substantially since 2020, but Cullman still retains the convenience, lower congestion and community feel of a smaller city. Census.gov

For a brewer, there is also a fitting cultural connection: Cullman was founded by German immigrants and still celebrates those roots. Oktoberfest is one of the city's signature annual events, and Cullman's Christkindlmarkt turns downtown into a German-inspired Christmas market each winter. The downtown area has become a walkable destination with locally owned restaurants, shops, parks, events and the Warehouse District. In 2025, USA Today readers ranked Cullman #2 in the country for Best Small Town Cultural Scene. Visit Cullman

But one of the biggest advantages of living here is what you can do when you are not working.

Lewis Smith Lake is right in Cullman's backyard, with clear water and opportunities for boating, fishing, swimming and lake life. It is one of the defining recreational features of the area. Visit Cullman

Head west and you have William B. Bankhead National Forest, one of Alabama's best outdoor destinations. Bankhead offers hiking, camping, mountain biking, fishing, boating, hunting and miles of forest to explore. Inside Bankhead is the 25,770-acre Sipsey Wilderness, with roughly 55 miles of wilderness trails. The area is known as the “Land of a Thousand Waterfalls” because of its waterfalls, sandstone canyons, creeks and heavily forested terrain. US Forest Service

So on a weekend you can be:

  • On Smith Lake boating or fishing
  • Hiking to waterfalls in Bankhead National Forest
  • Backpacking in the Sipsey Wilderness
  • Mountain biking or camping
  • Having dinner or a beer downtown
  • At Oktoberfest, the Strawberry Festival or Christkindlmarkt
  • Or headed to Birmingham or Huntsville for a concert, sporting event, airport or big-city weekend

Cullman gives you access to all of that without having to live in a major metropolitan area.

It is an especially attractive option for someone coming from an expensive craft-beer market who wants room to live, outdoor recreation close to home, a real community, and access to larger cities when you want them.

Cullman's own tourism organization describes it as a community combining a walkable downtown, German heritage, festivals, Smith Lake and small-town living while sitting conveniently between Birmingham and Huntsville—and that is a pretty accurate description of what makes the area appealing. If you are an experienced brewer who takes pride in your work, understands that cleanliness and consistency matter just as much as creativity, has good mechanical instincts, and wants to become an important part of a small brewery team, we would like to talk with you.
