JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the location of underground utility lines.
MAJOR DUTIES
• Receives and interprets locate requests; receives excavation notices through the one-call system.
• Researches site location, reviews utility maps, as-built drawings, and other records in order to help identify the presence of underground infrastructure.
• Locates and marks utility locations using proper color-coded paint and flags.
• Maintains accurate records of locates performed, including records of markings made and issues of discrepancies encountered.
• Communicates with excavators, contractors, utility representatives, and the general public on site, through email, and by telephone; provides information about utility locations; answers questions and provides information.
• Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
• Knowledge of GIS mapping systems and drawings.
• Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the locating of underground utilities.
• Knowledge of county and departmental safety policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of the geography of the county, including road names and locations.
• Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
• Skill in the locating and marking of underground utilities.
• Skill in using a variety of information sources and field evidence to locate utilities.
• Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
• Skill in maintaining files and records.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Operations Division Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include 811 one-call regulations, work safety policies, and county and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
• The work consists of varied utility locating duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
• The purpose of this position is to locate and mark underground utilities. Successful performance helps to avoid costly damage to existing infrastructure.
CONTACTS
• Contacts are typically with coworkers, contractors, engineers, utility company personnel, and members of the general public.
• Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
• The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
• The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
