What are the responsibilities and job description for the POOL LIFEGUARD position at Glynn County Government?
The purpose of this position is to supervise activities and people in a swimming area at pool facilities to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers and pool patrons.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Supervise assigned areas of a pool facility designated for swimming or wading; ensure compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, laws, standards, policies, and procedures
- Monitor safety and welfare of swimmers and other individuals; ensure adherence to established safety guidelines, American Red Cross best practices for lifesaving and lifeguarding, caution swimmers regarding unsafe areas or conditions; initiate any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations
- Monitor/supervise activities of all individuals using pool facilities and identify inappropriate actions; handle situations involving excess noise, disruptive behavior, potential violence or other problems; monitor crowd activities and initiate crowd control as needed; take appropriate disciplinary action to maintain a peaceful environment
- Conducts and/or assists with water rescues of swimmers in danger of drowning; administers first aid as needed; obtain emergency medical assistance when necessary
- Coordinates medical/rescue activities with emergency medical personnel
- Operate and maintain all issued lifeguard equipment, which may include a rescue board, rescue tube, first aid supplies, pool vacuum, wet/dry vacuum, pressure washer, blower, pool chemical testing kit, hand tools, telephone, or computer
- Report all accidents or injuries; complete accident/incident report and submit to supervisor
- Inspect/monitor pool grounds and facilities to identify potential hazards such as broken glass, broken/loose steps, or other situations which may cause injury to swimmers
- Perform various maintenance tasks and keeps accurate and timely records associated with pool facilities, which may include testing pool water, recording chemical readings, vacuuming pools, cleaning and mopping locker rooms/restrooms, cleaning/blowing pool decks, or making minor repairs to correct pool safety hazards
- Attend/participate in all mandatory meetings and in-service training programs to maintain physical stamina and mental awareness, and to practice and/or improve skills and overall fitness, administer CPR/First Aid, and render aid necessary to rescue and resuscitate near-drowning victims
- Communicate with supervisor, co-workers, other departments, swimmers, the general public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems
- Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor including abiding by uniform requirements
- Perform other duties as required
- This position will work a flexible schedule that will include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Performance of major duties may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, rain, heat, humidity, severe weather, temperature extremes, toxic chemicals, violence, disease, and pathogenic substances.
Glynn County pools are open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.
Glynn County offers a $500 hiring bonus for lifeguards who fulfill their work commitment during the season.
Qualifications:Must possess and maintain valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or be able to readily obtain certification upon selection for employment); possess or obtain CPR/AED/First Aid for the professional rescuer; Prior lifeguard or swimming experience is preferred
