Executive Director – Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS)

The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS), a well-established and debt-free nonprofit serving the Middle Peninsula since 1912, is seeking an experienced Executive Director to lead our organization through its next phase of growth — including the launch of our new 7,600 sq. ft. community event space, the Williams Center.
About the Role
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides strategic and operational leadership across all areas of the organization, including staff management, animal care operations, financial oversight, fundraising, community engagement, and policy development. This role serves as the public representative of GMHS and plays a critical part in ensuring long-term sustainability through donor relations, grants, and community partnerships.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead, mentor, and develop staff and volunteers to support a positive, mission-aligned culture
· Oversee financial management, budgeting, and organizational policies
· Develop and execute fundraising strategies, including grants, donor cultivation, and events
· Strengthen relationships with local governments, businesses, and community groups
· Ensure excellence in animal care and operational performance across all GMHS programs
· Support strategic planning and organizational growth initiatives
Qualifications
· Minimum 5 years of management experience (nonprofit preferred)
· Demonstrated success in fundraising, staff leadership, marketing, and public relations
· Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
· Experience managing budgets of $2M preferred
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
· Passion for animal welfare and community impact
