What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Valve and Hydrant Specialist position at Gloucester County?
The Gloucester County Public Utilities Department is seeking a qualified and mechanically skilled professional to join our Water Distribution team. In this position, you will be responsible for overseeing workflow and ensuring that tasks are completed in accordance with industry standards. Candidates with experience in valve and hydrant systems are encouraged to apply.
Under supervision, the Valve & Hydrant Specialist serves as lead worker on assigned crew performing specialized semi-skilled work associated with hydrant and valve inspections, cleaning, repairs, and replacement. Work involves use of vehicles, machinery, hand tools, and technology. Employee must exercise independent judgment when completing assigned tasks. Employee must also exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in contact with customers and the public.
Position reports to the Utility Foreman.
- Serves as lead worker on assigned crew; direct work of assigned crew; ensures work is performed to industry standards; ensures assigned crew adheres to applicable safety precautions and regulations.
- Locates, lubricates, inspects, exercises and documents valves in the County utility system; submits work orders for repairs and necessary.
- Inspects and flushes hydrants in the County utility system; documents rebuilds and replacements; submits work orders for repairs as necessary.
- Identifies valve castings that are inaccessible and address so valves can be properly utilized when needed.
- Determines the schedule for valve and hydrant inspects to meet best practices and industry standards; documents and manages the schedule to be shared with and accessed by all staff necessary.
- Works with other Utility crews, the fire departments, County staff, VDOT, contractors and others as necessary to address line repairs, replacements and emergencies.
- Performs general and preventative maintenance of equipment.
- Performs general maintenance of utility building and grounds, including mowing and landscaping duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Possession of a high school diploma/GED.
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible and directly related experience.
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Class A endorsement; possess and maintain a driving record that meets established Gloucester County Driving Standards.
- Pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination. Position subject to subsequent physical examinations to ensure incumbent meets physical job requirements.
