Mill Operator

Summary

Under direct supervision, responsible for setup and operation of band saws. Set up and operate power saws (reciprocating, band or circular) to cut materials to required length or contour in accordance with specifications. Install saw blades prescribed for some type of material, set stop gauges, saw speeds and indexing mechanisms such as may be provided for automatic positioning of materials. May be required to replace and align band saw. Position and secure materials on bed of machine using clamping arrangements of fixturing devices; check pilot piece for dimension. Contour cutting on band saw may require the scribing of cutting lines on materials from templates or the setting of radius pins for circular cuts.

Duties

• Reads the Sales Order Acknowledgement to determine setup specifications, product dimensions
• Starts and controls mechanisms that automatically feeds steel into rollers.
• Examines, inspects, and measures finished products to verify conformance to specifications.
• Manipulates controls and observes dial indicators in order to monitor, adjust and regulate speeds of machine mechanisms.
• Directs and trains mill helper workers to change rolls and operate mill equipment.
  
  

Minimum Required Procedural Competency

• MFG-L4-2 Tube Milling Procedure
• MFG-L4-3 Mill Hook Up and Spooling Procedure
• QC-L4-7 Visual Inspection of Strip and Tubing and Defect Removal Procedure
• QC-L4-8 Flattening and Flare Testing Procedure
  
  

Experience

• 3 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
