Job Overview
We are seeking an Experienced Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to join our crew and take on a key role in our operations. The HDD Operator will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating directional drilling equipment, specifically shuttle systems such as the Vermeer 20x22 and Vermeer 24x40, to install natural gas mains and services. This role includes operating the bore machine, locating the bore head, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety standards, plans, and customer requirements during gas utility construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform bore planning, setup, drilling, and pullback operations.
- Conduct pre- and post-operation inspections of equipment.
- Maintain safe work practices in compliance with OSHA, company, and customer standards.
- Commitment to safety and quality.
- Safely operate horizontal directional drilling equipment to install underground gas pipelines.
- Perform bore head locating using electronic locating devices to ensure accurate and safe bore paths.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and construction plans to determine bore paths and avoid existing utilities.
- Monitor bore progress, maintain drill fluid management, and adjust drilling parameters as needed.
- Perform routine inspection and maintenance of bore machine, locator, and associated tools.
- Work with ground crews to facilitate pullbacks, pipe installations, and tie-ins.
- Document bore cards and hours.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, inspectors, and customers as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years’ experience operating horizontal directional drilling rigs with proven proficiency on Vermeer 20x22 and/or 24x40 shuttle systems (Vermeer 20x22, 24x40, or similar).
- Knowledge of underground utility installation (natural gas).
- Ability to read and interpret utility maps and construction plans.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to pass operator qualification (OQ) testing and maintain certifications as required.
- Strong mechanical aptitude for equipment troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Physical ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- You must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
Work Environment
- Outdoor work on active construction sites.
- May include overtime, evening, weekend, or emergency work depending on operational needs.
