The driver is responsible for assisting the student with boarding and exiting the vehicle, operating any specialized equipment, and ensuring the student's well-being throughout the journey. The driver must have a high degree of patience and excellent communication skills to interact with the student, their parents, and school staff.
Key responsibilities:
- Safe transportation: Drive a designated accessible vehicle along an assigned route, strictly observing all traffic laws and regulations.
- Student assistance:
- Help the student with boarding and exiting the vehicle, which may include operating a wheelchair lift or ramp.
- Ensure the student is properly and securely fastened using seat belts, wheelchair tie-downs, or other safety equipment.
- Safety checks: Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure all equipment is in proper working condition. Report any mechanical issues immediately.
- Communication:
- Maintain clear communication with the student's parents and school staff regarding schedules, delays, or any incidents.
- Use a two-way radio to communicate with dispatch or administrators as needed.
- Student well-being:
- Monitor the student's behavior and attend to their needs during transport.
- Administer basic first aid if necessary and in accordance with established procedures.
- Reporting: Maintain and submit records of trip logs, mileage, and any incidents.
