PLUMBER
DEFINITION
Performs skilled plumbing installation, repair, and maintenance work in District facilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General supervision is provided by the assigned Regional Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Director, or Director of Facility and Support Operations.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Installs, repairs, and maintains a wide variety of plumbing fixtures and equipment, such as valves, control devices, dishwashers, pumps, boilers, toilets, faucets, water, sewer, and gas lines.
Replaces and repairs breaks or leaks and clears stoppages.
Cuts and threads pipe.
Makes inspections for needed repairs.
Repairs heating systems and water heaters.
Repairs and replaces various types of controls on kitchen and boiler equipment.
Orders supplies and equipment.
Operates various power tools and drives a District-assigned vehicle.
Performs related work as required.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Materials, tools, equipment, and methods of the plumbing trade.
Codes, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertinent to plumbing system installations, repairs, and maintenance.
Work hazards and safe work practices
Ability to:
Estimate labor and materials requirements.
Read, interpret, and work from plans, diagrams, and blueprints.
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Install, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures and systems.
Be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates and maintain insurability.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Five years of experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems with at least one year at the journey-level.
Possession of a valid Backflow Prevention Device Inspection Certificate issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services within the probationary period for the following devices: Reduced pressure principle device; Pressure-type vacuum breakers; Double check valve assembly; Atmospheric (spill resistant) vacuum breakers.
