Part-Time Tour Guides


Position Description:

Glencairn Museum is seeking part-time tour guides to deliver scripted tours to the public. This part-time position reports to the director of programming. Primary responsibilities include attending training sessions, learning scripted material, completing certifications, and delivering tours. It may also include hosting spaces in the Museum.


Glencairn Museum is part of the Academy of the New Church and is affiliated with the General Church of the New Jerusalem (newchurch.org), a Christian denomination based on the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg. The mission of Glencairn Museum is to create an intentional space that invites visitors to encounter religious art and artifacts as expressions of spiritual beliefs and practices. In stewarding and interpreting the collection and historic home, the Museum places a particular emphasis on art and artifacts that reflect the beliefs and practices of the New Church (Swedenborgian Christian) and the history of Glencairn, a National Historic Landmark.

Details

  • $15.50 hourly rate
  • Hours vary from 4 to 12 hours per week
  • Weekend hours are required, with the ability to work weekday afternoons as needed
  • Guided tours take place between 12:45 and 4:45 pm, Tuesday – Sunday
  • Part-time, no benefits
  • Reports to the director of programming
  • Paid training available


Working Conditions and Environment

This part-time position requires work between 4 to 12 hours per week. Guided tour lengths vary between 60-90 minutes and are offered Tuesday–Sunday between 12:45–4:45 pm. Work schedules will be determined based on the reported availability of the employee and the needs of the Museum. Successful candidates will have definite weekend availability and the ability to work weekday afternoons as needed. This position best suits candidates with other part-time shift work or flexible remote work.


Responsibilities

  • Attend required orientation and training sessions.
  • Learn tour scripts with mentorship provided by the director of programming
  • Complete certification of each tour conducted by the director of programming
  • Deliver scripted tours to public visitors
  • Enforce all Museum safety policies with visitors
  • Know and be prepared to act according to Museum emergency procedures
  • Answer questions about Glencairn Museum regarding information not included in the program script (FAQs provided)
  • Promote attendance at upcoming events, tours, programs, etc.
  • Undergo an annual assessment conducted by the director of programming

  • Possess excellent public speaking skills.
  • Be friendly, energetic, and welcoming to all guests.
  • Show an enthusiasm for history and art through material objects.
  • Possess comfort with communicating information about expressions of religious faith and practices across various cultures and time periods.
  • Be reliable, punctual, responsive, and communicative
  • Possess the ability to engage the attention of visitors of all ages including groups as large as 16 people.
  • Prioritize attention to the safety of visitors and objects.
  • Treat all Museum visitors with courtesy and respect.
  • Efficiently operate an elevator and move visitors through Museum galleries.
  • Communicate through both text and email.
  • Commit to learning and using the scheduling system used by Glencairn Museum.
  • Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma.
