JOB SUMMARY

Provides medical services for patients according to protocol; authorized to provide medical care without the direct observation and supervision of a Physician. The Physician Assistant is responsible for consulting a Physician for any situation that is deemed to be beyond the scope of practical experience of the Physician Assistant, and the Supervising Physician retains ultimate responsibility for patient care.  Participates in a team-based approach to care in the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).  Participates in activities related to Quality Improvement.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  1. Obtains and records appropriate medical history.
  2. Performs and records findings from physical examination.
  3. Initiates appropriate laboratory, radiologic and other tests needed for evaluation of the patient.
  4. Interprets results of diagnostic studies under direction and guidance of supervising physician.
  5. Initiates and documents treatment, including health maintenance and other preventive services per GLBHC protocol.
  6. Performs those procedures for which he/she is qualified to do either by training and/or experience. These include, but are not limited to:
    • Vena Puncture (including IV therapy)
    • Arterial Blood Gases
    • Bladder Catheterization
    • Intradermal Skin Test
    • IM and/or Subq Injections (including immunizations)
    • Perform Electrocardiogram Examination
    • Application/Removal of Dressings
    • Application/Removal of Cast
    • Appropriate Wound Care
    • Suture Removal
    • Suturing of Uncomplicated Lacerations (those not involving major nerves, tendons, arteries)
    • Gastric Lavage
    • Obtains Specimens for Cultures and Sensitivity, Gram Stains and other laboratory studies as indicated
    • Administers Local Anesthesia
    • Toenail Removal
  7. Prescribes medication not legally controlled in accordance with Michigan Public Act 420.
  8. Prescribes controlled medication as described in a written agreement with the supervising physician in accordance with Michigan law.
  9. Counsels patients and family in preventative care, health maintenance, and disease management.
  10. After consultation with supervising physician, makes referral of patient to appropriate specialist(s) or community service(s), and initiates tracking of such.
  11. Conducts inpatient rounds if agreeable with supervising physician and is privileged by the hospital(s) to do so.
  12. Provides leadership and mentoring to the non-physician providers at the site. This includes, but is not limited to, assistance with diagnosis and treatment plans, management of controlled medications, EHR usage and guidance with any GLBHC clinical protocols and procedures. 

 

MARGINAL JOB DUTIES

  1. Attends provider meetings and staff meetings as assigned.
  2. Participates in the continuing education of nursing staff, nurse practitioner, students, medical students, interns, residents and other students.
  3. Performs other functions related to health center as directed by GLBHC and/or Medical Director.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education: Evidence of completion from an accredited Physician Assistant program

Licensure: Current Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan.  Current Federal DEA Schedule II License

Experience: The applicant must provide documentation of his/her training and experience which supports the granting of requested privileges.

Skills: Diagnostic, therapeutic, interpersonal, organizational.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population.

Physical Effort: Must be able to sit, stand, and or walk for an entire workday. Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and or twist while holding up to 25 lbs. frequently.

Hours of Work: 30 hours per week or as necessary to complete the job. Flexible and varied. Evenings may be required.
