About the Position: This position will be filled as a developmental Deactivation Furnace Operator (Explosives Operator/FLO), WG-6501-08 target 09. Upon successful completion of performance and training requirements selectee will be promoted non-competitively to the target WG-09 grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Deactivation Furnace Operator (Expl Oper/FLO) without more than normal supervision. Experience performing a variety of operations in renovation, modification, demilitarization and preservation of ammunition and explosives to include: disassembly and breakdown of ammunition items, destroying explosives by detonation and burning following procedures specific to the particular item being destroyed. Experience operating a forklift. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Deactivation Furnace Operator works on hard surfaces in operations requiring walking, bending, reaching, and long periods of standing; occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 pounds. Explosives Operator work involves lifting and carrying items weighing up to 45 pounds; and working on production lines at rhythmic pace for extended periods, including standing, reaching, bending, stooping, and manipulating parts and using machines and hand tools. During fork lift operation, physical effort is required in braking and steering, manipulation of clutch, shift, lifting and tilting mechanisms.
Working Conditions: Deactivation Furnace Operator works in close proximity to munitions containing explosives; is exposed to prevailing weather conditions; and works with equipment which generates heat sometimes up to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. Subject to assignment to either of two shifts on a regular or rotating basis. Explosives Operator work is performed on the demolition range and outside on ramps and storage areas when weather is often inclement. There are assignments where dirt, grease, noise, and odors are often disagreeable. Deactivation Furnace Operator/Explosives Operator is required to wear protective clothing that is specially made and treated for working on explosives, including safety shoes, glasses, gas masks, and coveralls. There is a chance of injuries ranging from loss of life to burns, cuts, bruises, sprains, and nausea.
