Camp Catron Description:
Catron Camp and Retreat Center is one of the Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska properties where girls in grades K-12 can participate in outdoor activities, including, but not limited to: hiking, swimming, arts, crafts, archery, challenge course and Girl Scout curriculum (including earning badges). Catron Camp and Retreat Center is the home of Sky Camp, a spacious lodge, a swimming pool and a craft/nature center.
Role Description:
Camp Counselors directly work with campers leading and participating activities. They display personal pride in their work, a positive work ethic and have a proactive, positive and enthusiastic approach to change. They are responsible for implementing camp programs that drive our mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place! This is a position that requires overnight stays at the camp.
Staff Training:
- All Camp Staff Training: May 27-30, 2025 (First Aid and CPR training will be provided for those needing certifications),
Camp Dates:
- June 8-12, Camp Catron Classic (Insect camp)
- June 22-June 26, Camp Catron Creatives AND Sky’s the Limit Resident Camp
- July 13-17, Butterflies, Blooms, and Bees Resident Camp
- July 20-24, Wizarding World Adventure/ CIT
- The camp Director will be present for the above camps. There may be opportunities to work at other camps in the off weeks of Camp Catron. The camp Director should expect to work 1-2 days after the last camp to assist in the closing of camp for the summer.
Pay: $13.50; additional $25 per overnight
Key Accountabilities:
1. Responsible to lead, assist and participate with the teaching of activities to meet session goals; actively participates in all program areas as assigned. Incorporates an appreciation of the outdoors into the program.
2. Assists in program areas such as aquatic activities, nature, all camp activities and arts and crafts, as directed.
3. Ensure campers are properly supervised always.
4. Is alert to campers and staff needs, assists them with personal and/or health problems; consult with Resident Camp Director when appropriate. Responsible for campers receiving their medications as directed by Resident Camp Director or Resident Camp Assistant Director.
5. Maintain a safe and clean environment for all programming (utilizing GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints, American Camping Association and Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska). Work with the Ranger and Resident Camp Director to identify and correct maintenance problems promptly and efficiently.
6. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver programs, special events and all other resident camp activities and functions as assigned by the Resident Camp Director.
7. Maintain regular communication with the Resident Camp Director and Assistant Resident Camp Director (such as reporting concerns and updates and giving notification of accidents/incidents in a timely manner).
8. Develop sound relationships with all girl participants (such as learning participant’s names and conducting team building activities) to ensure a positive camp experience.
9. Renders first aid as needed.
Qualifications:
· Be a member or be willing to become a member of the Girl Scouts, support the principles of Girl Scouting and adhere to the custom and policies of the Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska.
· Be aware of and able to effectively handle personnel problems, health and safety procedures and emergency situations.
· Ability to work with girls and interact with all age levels.
· Ability to work effectively with parents, volunteers, staff and diverse communities.
· Demonstrate leadership and organizational skills, initiative, creativity and flexibility, including the ability to evaluate and make changes as necessary to ensure a successful Resident Camp program.
· Ability to work independently, self-direct and exercise time management skills as well as good judgment.
· Willingness to work in camp setting and work irregular hours.
· Ability to bend, lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
· First Aid/CPR certification preferred but will train.
· Must have a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required.
· Must have regular, reliable, predictable attendance in performance of essential job functions.
