The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Behind every Girl Scout and volunteer is a team of local staff ready to help them earn that next badge, embark on a camping adventure, or organize an impactful service project. We are Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey (GSNNJ) serving girls in grades K-12 in Bergen, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and northern Warren counties.

We bring the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to 19,000 girls and 10,200 adult members. GSNNJ is excited for the upcoming opening of its’ very own DreamLab. The DreamLab is designed to become a bold, imaginative hub for sisterhood — a space where ideas ignite, friendships flourish, and limitless possibilities come to life. This dynamic new experience center will offer Girl Scouts a whole new and meaningful way to explore our four pillars — STEM, Life Skills, Entrepreneurship, and Outdoors.

The Community Engagement Program Manager is responsible for developing and executing effective recruitment strategies and retaining girl/adult membership by ensuring that the Girl Scout Leadership Experience is accessible to all girls and qualified adults. The Manager will develop and deliver high quality programming focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), the outdoors, life skills development, entrepreneurial and career readiness. Developing community partnership opportunities focusing on Morris and Passaic Counties, NJ other jurisdiction areas as needed (Bergen, Sussex, and Northern Warren counties). The ideal candidate brings lived experience, cultural competence, and trusted community relationships that support inclusive outreach and membership growth. Experience working with a diverse population, as well as bilingual or multilingual skills (Spanish, Korean), are highly valued.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates elements of a forward-thinking, gender reinforcing, youth-driven, community based out-of-school time program for K-12 grade students in the areas of STEAM, the outdoors, life skills development, entrepreneurialism, career, and college readiness.
  • Collaborates cross functionally, with focus on Membership Managers, Member Experience, Program Department, Camp, and DreamLab Staff.
  • Assists in achieving the council’s goals for girl and adult membership through implementing membership strategies in assigned areas.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Community Engagement to strategically plan the transformation of existing programs and creation of new programming to address emerging interests and needs of girls and their families.
  • Designs a comprehensive plan for girl and adult membership growth in targeted areas by researching market data, membership trends and other pertinent information relevant to designated areas.
  • Prepares action plans and schedules to identify specific targets and to project the number of contacts to be made to meet membership goal.
  • Seeks opportunities to engage and keep in contact with community organizations, agencies and leaders, educators, and faith-based institutions to increase awareness of and participation in Girl Scouting.
  • Provides direct programming in which girls will have sample opportunities to lead and direct projects.
  • Performs program evaluations and timely reporting, ensuring that program events and activities have annual work plans with measurable outcomes.
  • Represents the council at community meetings and gatherings relevant to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
  • Cultivates relationships with appropriate community leaders, organizations, and businesses to support recruitment efforts within targeted areas to positively impact membership growth.
  • Ensures Girl Scouting is open to all girls and adults by delivering the Girl Scout message of pluralism and diversity to potential and existing members of the council.
  • Follows up on new leads and referrals resulting from field activity in a timely fashion.
  • Serves as a program liaison, developing intentional collaborations with community organizations/businesses to enhance program services for girls.
  • Provides the Director of Community Engagement with regular analysis of program participation, outcomes, and financial performance.
  • Promotes and assists with council-wide activities, public relations, and fund development endeavors.
  • Applies expert knowledge of girls, girl issues, and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to staff and volunteers in delivering high-quality program experiences to a growing number of diverse girls.
  • Plans, designs, and deliver innovative grant-funded programs and works collaboratively with colleagues to deliver and report on outcomes of grant funded programs.
  • Helps foster and implement the council’s policy to strive for a volunteer, employee, and program participant population reflective of the area’s religious, racial, ethnic, social, and economic diversity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in youth development, child psychology, education, social work or related field working within youth, teen, or family programming.
  • Sales or recruitment experience and knowledge of Girl Scout policies and procedures preferred.
  • A positive attitude, integrity, and interest in helping girls reach their fullest potential.
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills; detail-oriented and organized.
  • Strong community relationships, relationship management, effective outreach relationship skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of program development and evaluation methodologies.
  • Ability to be creative, innovative and flexible in responding to changing priorities and emerging needs.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritize and meet deadlines, and to manage several activities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Membership in GSUSA is required upon employment and annually thereafter.
  • Ability to travel throughout the GSNNJ jurisdiction including but not limited to Paterson, Passaic, Clifton, Morristown areas to attend meetings during the day/evening/weekend.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable automobile and auto insurance.
