The Camp Program Director actively contributes to the development and implementation of a camp program that aligns with the Girl Scout ethos, camping objectives, and the unique needs and interests of the campers. Working in tandem with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director, this position establishes essential routines, schedules, procedures for camp operations, and ensures the proper maintenance of camp property. Additionally, they play a pivotal role in planning and executing staff training and in-service training in coordination with the Camp Director. The Program Director will lead the camp during the absence of the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director.

The Program Director will also assist with the opening and closing of the camp and contributing to the overall health and well-being of both campers and staff are integral parts of this position.

The Program Director provides supervision and leadership to all program staff, assuming administrative duties delegated by the Camp Director, including leading staff meetings and large group activities. Being available for camp meetings and aiding in behavior management among campers are crucial aspects of this role. Furthermore, responsibilities include facilitating the transportation of campers or staff during the camp season, aiding in maintaining camper records in CampMinder and handling camper awards, and supporting the general daily operations, including camper and staff schedules.

This position begins in early-June and ends in late-August, which includes one week of staff training before campers arrive.

What else should I know about the position?

  • Unit Staff live in tent units with up to 3 other staff and up to 24 campers.
  • Additional certification week (if needed) may include CPR, wilderness first aid, lifeguarding, canoeing, challenge course, hatchet throwing, archery, etc.
  • Summer Camp Programs for girls ages 7-17
  • Between 80 -120 campers attend each overnight session at Camp Pondicherry.
  • We offer 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-week programs for our campers.
  • The Pondicherry summer team consists of 35- 40 staff members.

Requirements:

  • Must be 25 years of age or older (per state requirements).
  • Previous experience working with youth
  • Experience in a supervisory position
  • Be an enthusiastic, caring adult who is passionate about working with campers.
  • Belief in the mission and core principles of Girl Scouting
  • Passion and excitement for the outdoors.
  • Willingness to obtain First Aid/CPR certification or be currently certified.
  • Ability to prioritize the needs of campers and to communicate with and provide direction to campers and staff of varying age and skill levels.
  • Ability to provide constant supervision of campers and help campers navigate emotional well-being during their time at overnight camp.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Ability to share living quarters with other staff (may include directly on-ground, primitive camping, rustic cabins, platform tents, or lodges).
  • Ability to establish and maintain boundaries with campers and fellow staff.
  • Demonstrated maturity, sound judgment, integrity.
  • Ability to go without electronic devices for several hours or days at a time while on duty (excluding medically necessary devices).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable under GSME’s insurance.

Physical requirements:

Ability and willingness to perform tasks that exert physical effort, which may involve bending, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 40 pounds). Regular standing and prolonged periods of walking on rough and uneven terrain at camp is required as is working in the heat, sun exposure, and other weather conditions.
