Girl Scouts of Maine has an immediate opening for a talented, dynamic director for Camp Pondicherry in Bridgton, in Maine’s beautiful Lakes Region. The Camp Director is a year-round position responsible for managing all aspects of camp, including the administration of overnight camp, troop and family camp, off season events, and program events.

While a private apartment for year-round housing is available for this position, the only months the Camp Pondicherry Director must live on site at Camp Pondicherry are from May through August each year. Frequent in-state travel is required throughout the year. Additionally, evening and weekend work may arise during the year and is required during the summer.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all aspects of Camp Pondicherry programming to include: summer overnight camp, family camping and special events, throughout the year. May assist with planning and delivery of programs on other sites.
  • Create Camp Program Curriculum for overnight camps, specialty program, and field trips.
  • Work with Camp Program Team and Human Resources team to develop a summer staff recruitment and retention plan each year.
  • Supervise and evaluate performance of Camp Pondicherry seasonal staff, providing ongoing training, coaching and feedback.
  • Develop new revenue-generating opportunities to increase camp utilization i.e. events, retreats, etc. at our camps.
  • Oversee all on-site camp rentals, ensuring a positive experience for rental groups.
  • Develops guidelines, systems, and procedures to manage safety and risk. Ensure all programs comply with local, state and Girl Scouts regulations and meet American Camp Association (ACA) accreditation standards.
  • Develop and implement camper recruitment and retention strategies, including direct participation in recruitment events and various community collaborations to increase camper registration and expand our membership.
  • Provides quality customer service and maintains positive relationships with staff, alumni, parents, volunteers and campers.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Twenty-five years of age or older (per American Camp Associate requirements)
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in youth outdoor camping administration
  • Prior supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to coach, train and supervise staff and to develop a climate of trust, respect and accountability (5 years’ experience preferred).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, access to personal transportation for business travel and proof of insurance.
  • Must subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become a registered member of GSUSA
  • Sound fiscal management experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel), Microsoft Teams and Zoom; experience with Camp Minder and a CRM system such as Salesforce desirable
  • Demonstrated outdoor and leadership knowledge and experience.
  • Understanding of risk management
  • Willingness to obtain skill certifications, including CPR and Wilderness First Aid
  • Proven oral and written communication abilities with an emphasis on active listening and customer service skills
  • Effective team-builder, cross-functional collaborator and problem-solver
  • Self-starter who can work independently and take initiative; is flexible, adaptable, organized and has a strong attention to detail

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Position requires the ability and willingness to perform tasks that involve physical effort, which may include bending, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight.
  • Ability to bend, lift and carry up to 40lbs
  • The position also requires prolonged periods of standing and walking on rough and uneven terrain at camp.
  • Position occasionally requires working in severe weather conditions or while exposed to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions.

WORK SCHEDULE/ AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling responsibilities and in meeting the camp’s needs.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as well as frequent travel are required
  • Must be able to live onsite during the summer camp season June through August each year.
