What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Pondicherry Director (Seasonal) position at Girl Scouts of Maine?
Girl Scouts of Maine has an opening from late May to late August for a talented, dynamic Seasonal Camp Director for Camp Pondicherry in Bridgton, located in Maine’s beautiful Lakes Region. The Camp Director is a seasonal position responsible for managing all aspects of camp, including the administration of resident camp, day camp, troop and family camp. The work of this position is integrated into the overall program goals of GSME, therefore, the Director participates in various collaborative council committees and efforts. The Camp Director ensures that program offerings are based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, customized to address the needs, preferences and interests of girls, and implemented to meet designated leadership program outcomes.
Director must live on site at Camp Pondicherry during the summer camp season.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administers all aspects of Camp Pondicherry programming to include: summer resident camp, day camp, events, troop and family camping.
- Recruit and train camp staff to effectively fulfill their leadership responsibilities. Ensure all staff receive job-specific training, supervision, corrective action plans, and follow-up, up to and including release, if appropriate.
- Develop, expand and implement progressive outdoor education opportunities to contribute to and nurture girls’ respect for the environment; build outdoor and camping skills; and retain and extend membership.
- With guidance from the Director of Camp Programs and Property, manage appropriate annual budgets. Oversees all business management functions of camp including financial records, camper records, online database records, office operations, etc. using various council data bases.
- Develops guidelines, systems, and procedures to manage safety and risk, Ensure that all programs comply with local, state and Girl Scouts regulations
- Develops systems and procedures to measure outcomes, manage information and provide timely and accurate reports.
- Addresses concerns/issues in a fair, positive, and appropriate manner, providing quality customer service and maintaining positive relationships with staff, alumni, parents, volunteers and campers.
- Serves as a role model for campers and staff by setting positive examples and fosters the overall health and well-being of campers and camp staff.
- Visits units frequently to ensure that they are a physically and emotionally safe environment for the campers and that staff are working in accordance with camp procedures and goals.
- Is available for camp meetings and assists with behavior management of campers.
- Responds to parent concerns by phone or email.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work/life experience
- Twenty-five years of age or older (per ACA requirements)
- A minimum of two years’ experience in youth outdoor camping administration
- Prior supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to coach, train and supervise staff and to develop a climate of trust, respect and accountability (3 years’ experience preferred).
- Must have a valid driver’s license, access to personal transportation for business travel and proof of insurance.
- Sound fiscal management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel)
- Microsoft Teams and Zoom
- Experience with Camp Minder preferred
- Demonstrated outdoor and leadership knowledge and experience.
- Understanding of risk management.
- First-aid skills, including CPR and Wilderness First Aid (Training may be provided as needed)
- Willingness to obtain skills certifications, as appropriate
- Position requires professional interpersonal communication skills, including good oral and written communication skills; active listening and customer service skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively and build rapport with campers, parents, volunteers, staff, and the general public both orally and in writing.
- Must have the ability to read and interpret documents, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and governmental regulations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Position occasionally requires working in severe weather conditions or while exposed to wet, cold, and/or humid conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Position requires the ability and willingness to perform tasks that involve physical effort, which may include bending, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight.
- Ability to bend, lift and carry up to 40lbs
- The position also requires prolonged periods of standing and walking on rough and uneven terrain at camp.
WORK SCHEDULE/AVAILABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Regular and predictable attendance
- Must be flexible and cooperative in fulfilling responsibilities and in meeting the camp’s needs.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
- Must be able to live onsite during the summer camp season. Camp season starts in June with trainings and ends in August
