Position Summary 

The Health and Inclusion Specialist trains and mentors Day Camp staff on inclusion, maintains health records, and develops behavior plans to ensure a safe and equitable environment for campers. 

Mariposa Day Camp 

Mariposa is a cozy, park-like property in the foothills of Altadena in the San Gabriel Valley. It includes a large grassy space, a wooded area with water misters, and a campfire ring with an adjacent amphitheater. 

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

  1. Provide care to meet the diverse needs of camp staff and campers.   
    • Supervise and provide care (including medication administration) for both staff and campers seeking medical attention.    
    • Conduct a comprehensive health screening by verifying medical history, emergency authorization, and assessing for signs of illness or communicable diseases 
    • Facilitate and mentor the inclusion of all campers including those with physical, emotional, behavioral, or developmental disabilities.  
    • Plan and coordinate the camp snack menu.   
    • Provide camp staff with weekly camper reports to raise awareness of campers’ needs and accommodations.    
  2. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for campers. 
    • Ensure camper health examinations are current and on file.   
    • Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.   
    • Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.   
    • Review daily health logs and report significant injuries or health concerns to the Outdoor Program Supervisor. 
    • Maintain accurate files for each camper, including health forms, permission slips and child release forms; provide timely statistical and attendance reports on day camp participants.  
  3. Participate as a member of the camp administrative team by supporting the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the camp operations.   
    • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, providing support and guidance to those assigned as leaders. 
    • Share observations and suggest improvements to the Outdoor Program Supervisor related to camp programming and staff performance.   
    • Participate in supporting programs, special events, and other activities and functions involving the entire camp. 
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.   
    • Attend, participate in and lead staff meetings as required.  
    • Assist where needed with camper “check-in” and “check-out”.    
    • Function as an Acting Director in accordance with the LA County Children’s Camp Guidelines.  
  4. Provide a safe, enjoyable program that complies with GSGLA, state, and industry standards. 
    • Adhere to all safety and security protocols. Ensure protocols are followed by camp staff. 
    • Demonstrate proper camp procedures, sanitation, punctuality, and sportsmanship for campers and staff. 
    • Provide outstanding customer service to families.    
    • Be an inspiring role model by communicating clearly, building strong relationships, encouraging inclusivity, connecting with others, and motivating youth.  
  5. Be prepared and attentive during all off-site field trips. 
    • Oversee the activities of campers and staff members throughout the field trip. 
    • Follow the field trip schedule and remain punctual throughout the day.  
    • Adhere to all field trip safety and supervision protocols. 
    • Maintain professional and positive communication venue personnel. 
    • Assist GSGLA Camp staff by offering support during field trips.  
    • Ensure the proper transport and administration of camper medications during off-site field trips. 
  6. Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Must be 21 years of age as stated by the LA County Children’s Camp Guidelines. 
  • Must be available for 6 weeks of day camp (June 15, 2026 – July 24, 2026) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available. 
  • Must have at least 2 years documented experience teaching or interacting in youth programming. 
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.  
  • Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities. 
  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds periodically.  
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience 

  • College credits in health, child development, education, psychology, or related field. 

GSGLA Employee Requirements 

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training 
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned 
  • Must successfully complete a Live Scan and background check
