Position Summary

The Unit Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of camp unit programs. The Unit Manager is responsible for mentoring, training, and guiding all unit staff and campers. The Unit Manager also assists the senior staff team with the management of camp operations.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Mentor, supervise, and evaluate counselors and unit leaders within their respective roles throughout the camp day.
    1. Regularly monitor the work of counseling staff by being present during in-unit activities throughout the camp day.
    2. Provide feedback and guidance to counseling staff.
    3. Provide recommendations and address areas of concern to camp director regarding counselor performance and improvement.
    4. Mediate camper conflicts and support counseling staff by role modeling appropriate behavior management techniques.
    5. Coordinate weekly staff/unit evaluations and conduct beginning, mid-summer, and end of summer evaluations for all counseling staff.
    6. Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all camp staff.
    7. Communicate with Camp Director daily for updates on counselors' progressions and concerns. 
  2. Oversee the organization and implementation of all unit activities and specialized programs to meet intended camper outcomes.
    1. Responsible for maintaining unit schedules, being aware of any scheduling changes throughout the week, and communicating with Camp Director, as necessary.
    2. Ensure units fulfill the specific program promises related to their age group and designated program.
    3. Under the direction of the Camp Director, create weekly unit assignments and ensure camper/staff ratios are met.
    4. Create weekly session handouts for staff that streamline changes, updates, and important information for the upcoming week.
    5. Prepare unit folders to include pertinent camper information, rosters, badges/patches, arrival/departure information and other resources counseling staff need access to throughout each session. 
    6. Coordinate all aspects of a successful outdoor cooking program, including food requests, delivery, implementation.
    7. Assist in program areas such as high ropes, horseback riding, water activities, archery, and all camp activities, as directed.
  3. Ensure high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
    1. Assure campers are always properly supervised.
    2. Ensure that ACA standards, state codes, and guidelines from GSGLA and GSUSA are being followed.
    3. Coordinate and assign unit kapers, ensure sanitation and cleanliness standards are upheld in living areas of camp.
    4. Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
    5. Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures in all camp areas.
    6. Assist campers and staff with their health and safety needs; discuss with camp health director and/or camp director when appropriate.
  4. Act as a member of the camp senior staff team during activities and throughout the camp day to plan, direct, and supervise all camp operations.
    1. Address camper and staff concerns in a timely manner; effectively communicate changes and concerns with the Camp Director.
    2. Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training.
    3. Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, sleep outs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
    4. Participate in administrative staff meetings, lead daily unit leader meetings, and all staff meetings as needed.
    5. Willingness and readiness to drive for Bagel and Home Crew
    6. On-call on weekends to provide transportation for staff as part of the cultural exchange program, including trips to the city and destinations such as Target, Disneyland, and movie theaters ect.
  5. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be 21 years of age by the start of camp training.
  • Must be available for the duration of the overnight camp season including pre-camp trainings and post-camp clean up (May 2026 – August 2026).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be willing and able to drive camp staff in a GSGLA van.
  • Must be willing to work weekends, early morning, and late-night hours as needed.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.
  • Ability to spend time sitting, utilizing the computer, and standing and walking throughout the facilities.
  • Ability to lift up to 45 pounds periodically.
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience

  •  Prior experience supervising staff or managing a program unit in a camp, school, or youth organization.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office tools for tracking schedules, Camper units and staff assignments.
  • Experience working with youth and managing daily operations in a camp or recreational setting.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
  • Must successfully complete a Live Scan and background check
