JOB SUMMARY

Engage campers in activities such as hiking, archery, challenge course, swimming, horseback riding, STEAM and more! Depending on your role, you will leave camp with certifications in First Aid/CPR, USA Archery Level 1 Instructor, Lifeguard, and more!
Unit Leaders are responsible for providing leadership and supervision to our general counselors who live in cabins with the campers. They will support counselors with problem solving, the day-to-day lifestyle of living in a cabin with campers, work with other leadership staff to create a safe environment for campers and staff, be a role model to all staff and campers and help deliver exciting, fun, and memorable experience for all campers.
Unit Leaders are expected to live on-site for the duration of the camp season. If, for any reason, a Unit Leader needs to live off-site, this arrangement may be discussed and approved in advance with the Assistant Camp Director.
Unit Leader Areas
Specialty Unit Leader – Daisy Unit (Day Camp)
Supports our Daisy campers (typically rising kindergarten and first grade) by providing age-appropriate supervision and guidance to counselors working with younger campers.
This role focuses on helping counselors manage transitions, routines, emotional regulation, and first-time camp experiences. The Daisy Unit Leader helps create a nurturing, structured, and joyful environment that supports independence, confidence-building, and social development while serving as a point of support for both campers and staff throughout the camp day.
Leadership Unit Leader – CIT & FLIT Support
Supports the Leadership Program Coordinator in fostering leadership skills within Counselors in Training (CITs), Future Leaders in Training (FLITs), and Junior Counselors.
This role emphasizes mentorship, coaching, and professional skill development. The Leadership Unit Leader helps guide young leaders through responsibility, communication, teamwork, and self-reflection while supporting their emotional growth and readiness for increased leadership roles within camp.
Waterfront Unit Leader
Assists the Head Lifeguard with daily operations and supervision at the pool and lakefront.
Responsibilities include supporting lifeguards and counselors, helping maintain safety protocols, assisting with swimmer supervision and rotations, ensuring clear communication during aquatic activities, and supporting emergency readiness. The Waterfront Unit Leader helps create a calm, confident environment that prioritizes safety, teamwork, and positive camper experiences in water-based programming.
Outdoor Adventure Unit Leader (Ropes / Challenge Course)
Assists the Outdoor Adventure Program Coordinator in facilitating fun, engaging, and safe adventure-based activities.
This role supports counselors and campers during ropes course and challenge activities by reinforcing safety expectations, encouraging confidence and teamwork, and helping campers work through challenges in a supportive and motivating way. The Outdoor Adventure Unit Leader helps foster resilience, trust, and positive risk-taking while maintaining a safe and structured environment.
STEM Unit Leader
Supports the STEM Program Coordinator by assisting counselors and campers during hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math activities.
This role helps ensure activities are organized, accessible, and engaging, while supporting counselors in classroom management, camper focus, and problem-solving. The STEM Unit Leader encourages curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and confidence, helping campers feel supported as they explore new ideas and skills.
Arts Unit Leader
Supports both arts & crafts and performing arts programming across camp.
This role assists counselors and program staff in creating inclusive, expressive, and organized creative spaces. The Arts Unit Leader helps campers feel confident sharing ideas, collaborating with peers, and exploring self-expression through visual and performing arts while supporting staff with materials, transitions, and camper engagement.
Duties and Responsibilities

Participate in supervisor training prior to camp

Help plan, implement, and conduct staff training and orientation with the Leadership Team

Supervise, guide, and evaluate counselors within the assigned unit

Manage, oversee, and support all campers and staff within the assigned unit

Support campers and staff in developing responsibility, including morning routines, hygiene, and cabin chores

Serve as direct supervisor for counselors in the designated unit and conduct regular evaluations

Collaborate with staff to create fun, engaging, and inclusive evening programs for the whole camp

Serve as a positive role model for campers and staff in words, actions, and leadership style

Assist in leading programs and activities, providing guidance and support when needed

Support counselors in addressing camper behavior with care, consistency, and respect

Observe camper well-being and communicate concerns with supervisors as appropriate

Keep supervisors informed of plans, concerns, and notable camper or staff needs

Support other areas of camp to ensure smooth operations and quality programming

Assist with opening and closing camp duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to evaluate performance and give feedback.
- Experience working with children.
- Maturity in problem solving and decision making.
- Stamina is necessary to live in the camp setting which includes traverse rough and uneven terrain without assistance.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
- Ability to make decisions and act wisely in an emergency.
- Sense of adventure and enthusiasm to motivate and coach campers and staff.
- Preferred minimum age 21 with at least 2 years of camp counseling experience.
